One for Blair?http://cjoint.com/data/imppFQZ1TF.htm Someone once asked why dealers sent stamps with plain tabs. The simple reason is it saves a fraction of a second time and eliminates one chance of a torn corner. I have found the plain tabs useful in a coulpe of instances. The US issued some stamps in booklet form that were identical to the sheet form. The sheet stamp with tab verified it was from a sheet of stamps and not from the booklet. PITA. As most collectors know Israel is big on the tabbed stamps. Ralphael, the OLD one |

"Sir F. A. Rien" On the US issues it's called "selvege". True 'tabs' were usually the same size as the accompanying stamp. No, that is British English, US English is "Selvage" it comes from the root meaning of "self edge" 16th cent No doubt journalists use varying expressions in magazines depending on their knowledge. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selvage |

AFAIK, most true tabs are also printed, not so the US sheet 'edges' as you mentioned discerning the difference between nooklet and sheet.- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - Thank you very much for clearing the muddy waters. I appreciate the fact that you cared enough to remind me what I knew at one time but forgot. Someone once said "The mind is a terrible thing to waste." Unfortunately I have wasted most of mine. I blame it on CRS, the curse of seniors. :-) RtOo |
