Does anyone know if these have any gold, and if so, how much?
According to the red book, these coins have no numismatic value: http://cgi.ebay.com/USA-1-2-Dollar-1...QQcmdZViewItem Thanks. -- Bob Hairgrove |

I believe that the 1902-dated versions were made in 10K as part of a "Coins Of The Golden West" souvenir set produced by Hart around the turn of the last century. California gold fantasy coins
Bob,
This particular issue is actually old (small tail on bear), and there are a few collectors of the California tokens who will pay good prices for them, though nowhere near what the originals are worth. This one may be 8k - 14k gold, but there is no way to know--in any case, its value is far less than half what a U.S. gold dollar would be worth. (The retail selling price was usually face value, and the manufacturer sold them for up to 60% back of face, or 20 cents per half dollar. If you are an ANA member, you can borrow from the ANA Library a copy of California Pioneer Fractional Gold, 2nd edition (2003), which explains this in detail, based on Secret Service reports of the time.) Mike Locke has the finest collection of these tokens and also has a web site on them. He has not bid on this item as of yet and may not need it. I can't really read the date on this, but if it is really 1902, that would probably be the actual year of manufacture. Nearly all are backdated, though. Personally I would rather own a damaged piece actually used in the 1850s for small change than a modern fantasy piece in MS-65, but to each his own! Bob Leonard |
