These two stamps differ,
1 is engraved 1962 'tother 1963
Do they attract differing catalogue numbers in Stanley Gibbons?

SG Part 2 doesn't mention a 1962 variety. The 40fi orange and 60fi
have LH imprint variants, but in length not date (and there are some
coil stamps p14). That 2 is a bit blurred in your scan, and might just
be a poor copy. Looking at my own stamps of this set, many of the 3s
are just splodges, though a few certainly do look like 2s, one
exceptionally so.

Were your two stamps scanned together? There is an obvious difference
in size, but the 10fi does not appear in the smaller 1973 coil set.

Maybe someone has more recent info -- my Austria & Hungary cat is
dated 1988.

Thank you Chris,
each stamp was scanned separately, some years apart.
As everyone must notice, there are squillions of these definitives,
I'll keep a look out for the coils, and re investigate my duplicates.

Rod:

I looked at them all (including the coils).. There is only one 10
filler stamp.
It was issued in 1963 (first year of the series.) . It is the lowest
value in
the set. (Scott minimum cv 20c)

What does your 2005 SG Stamps of the World say?

G'day Blair,
Stanley Gibbons SOTW is fairly basic,
shows only 1 set.

Clearly they are two different stamps, the text under 1 stamp finishes under
the leg of the A
and on the other, under the M

It reminds me of the DDR officials,
a very slight difference between printings.
Perhaps these ubiqitous Romanian definitives are not respected enough to
warrant
close inspection.

I have about 3Kg of these hanging around somewhere, and I'll look through
the
stamps for obvious changes in print.

see where the "1" of 1962-3 begins on the two stamps

I hear you. In my experience, no catalogues, except one specialized
for that country (i.e. expensive), would use a different printing
date
at the bottom as justification for a subsequent catalogue number.

The France "peace and commerce" issues
have a differing length text at the bottom lhs as a "variety"
but that does lie within the frame of the stamp.
(just thought I'd bring that to your attention

Then in 2003 an RCSD poster brought this to our attention
an "upside down 9" on an Austrian issue
No one seemed to think that was any big deal either

You spend hours flyspecking, and nobody cares anyhow

Rodney,

it is obvious that these stamps are different!

But you do not expect these bloody catalogue manufacturers helping you out
in these irrelevant [to them!] differences? Do you?

If you are collecting and specialising Hungary yourself you have a lot
more work to do as there are plenty of variants..... Although the
Hungarian catalogue does not to bother either!

I do not expect anything, Rein except death and taxes, and the love of my
wife.
However, I do reserve the right to question

If you are collecting and specialising Hungary yourself you have a lot

"work" in my biased opinion, is that which one has to do, to raise income.
I collect little pieces of paper that sometimes look different,
It is not work, but a passion.
I can reflect that it is a folly, but it passes the time rather well,
offers satisfaction and challenges intellectually.
I have observed also, that beings that collect things are generally
speaking, rather a happy lot.
If there is no published information that deals with my observations, then I
shall have to deal with it.
The unlucky person that shall inherit my 300Gb hard drive
will at least know they exist

Greetings.
Rodney.
