Default UK Postal Area (City / Town) codes

Note that these are "area" codes, rather than "town" codes-for sorting
purposes only. Some quite large towns have no codes of their own - for
example Dewsbury (pop 54000 + ) and nearby towns of Batley and
Heckmondwike ( in Yorkshire ) have WF codes and have absolutely no
natural affinity with Wakefield whatsoever. Note also that "inbound"
and "outbound" sorting are completely seperate in Royal Mail terms.

The inbound sorting codes are quite clever and relate down to street
level. A combination of postcode and house number identifies your
address ( large company premises have postcodes of their own). When in
a traders premises a computer programme can confirm your identity
based on this info.

My own postcode is LE ( Leicester) 9 (district ) then ( figure )+( 2
letters) refers to the street - sequential letter codes are on the
same postman's walk.

Incidentally ZE for Shetland refers to the official name which is
Zetland.

Which explains the origin of the Sydney suburb of that name. I'd
always wondered.

Blair should also know it as the oldest surviving lifeboat.

It is also a type of "Zony" a cross between a Zebra and a Shetland pony,
I wasn't aware Shetland ponies came from Africa.
