Two SAE Questions - "First Strike" and "What Percentage" guesstimate
Would appreciate any facts or opinions on rolls of Silver Eagles fresh
out of Green Box.... 1) Is there really much to this "first strike" business? While I can understand the possibility of greater quality in the first few coins stamped, aren't the dies themselves replaced constantly throught the entire run? Theoretically then, isn't it possible to get "first strike" coins at virtually anytime during the mint run? 2) What would be your guesstimate of MS breakdown on any given original SAE roll? (i.e., 60% MS69 - 30% MS68 - 10% MS67). |

Unless there was documented evidence that the coin in question is indeed the very first SAE struck in that year, I would add no special premium to such a coin. 2) What would be your guesstimate of MS breakdown on any given original SAE roll? (i.e., 60% MS69 - 30% MS68 - 10% MS67). Well, that depends. What service? Real grades, or what the service assigns? For example, here's how NGC graded 2004's crop of silver eagles: 67 -- 10 (0.02%) 68 -- 208 (0.5%) 69 -- 42487 (96.7%) 70 -- 1214 (2.8%) However, PCGS has not graded *any* 2004 SAEs in 70. 68 -- 65 69 -- 6872 70 -- 0 ANACS would probably be even "worse" -- 69s are damn hard to score at ANACS, and 70s completely nonexistent. -- Bob |

Is this for proof or uncirc SAEs? (Hard to believe the uncircs would grade anything like that...) |

I'm a little surprised that there are no PCGS 70's. |
