Best Way To Sell Old Books
I live in a small town. I have some Grabhorn Press books (1930's) I'm trying
to get rid of on ebay. I looked up similar books at Abe Books and priced them below those prices, for the most part. There doesn't seem to be much interest, though. I'm wondering if I should have, perhaps, went through a book store to sell on consignment, sold to a book store outright, or.... What is the best way to sell old books in a reasonable (say, a month or two) amount of time, and get a halfway decent price? |

But either this way or selling on eBay you will be lucky to get half the retail ABE prices. Every general dealer would like to know the answer to this question. Probably only the specialist dealer who has some Grabhorn collectors would be successful at what you want to do. If you are willing to wait you can put them on Alibris (commission only) and wait. There may be some mailing lists/websites for Grabhorn collectors (or somewhat more general) you might advertise on. -- Jonathan Grobe Books Browse our inventory of thousands of used books at: http://www.grobebooks.com |

Don't expect to get retail for your deaccessions--unless you are willing to become a bookseller with a stock in trade that may linger longer than you'd like. I recently sold a rather rare late-19/c American Indian prayerbook to a top Americana dealer. Given that the last copy to sell at auction (which he bought) didn't even make its low estimate, he suggested that I shouldn't expect a giant windfall. I offered a price that was a modest improvement over the last auction price and he snapped it up. In fact, I got 4x what I paid for it on eBay. Of course, I was a little surprised when I saw that the dealer then listed the book for 5x what he paid me! But, you know what, it's going to take even this top dealer some time to sell that book (he's still got it--for the time being), and I didn't care to become a big-time Americana dealer, so it all worked out and everyone is happy. It's the circle of biblio-life. (Forgive me, but I did see THE LION KING on Broadway this past summer.) .. .. .. William M. Klimon http://www.catholicbookcollector.com |
