rowe ami black magic with display malfunction / carousel keeps spinning
Hello everyone,
I am the proud owner of a rowe ami r-82 black magic (for about 4-5 months). Via kleening I managed to 'repair' some small defaults. It has been playing perfectly, almost daily. However as of late, it won't stop spinning during start up. Normaly the carousel would stop at #127 or #177, however it will skip these numbers on the display....and keep on spinning. The display will show the numbers 280 through 210 and then will skip back to 200. This will happen twice. Then continue with 240 through 250 (twice) and will contue back at 280 and start all over again. During start up, the scan led on the control unit keeps burning. Indicating that the memory unit and encoder are O.K. (service manual) So is this a display 'problem' or a memory unit (301-07855) / encoder (601-07667) 'problem' as suggested by the troubleshooting charts of the service manual. I have checked the wires and plugs and everything looks O.K. and no battery leakage on the memory unit board. When manualy turning the cam and triggering the switches, the jukebox will play perfectly. But keeps on spinning as soon as the record is put back. Any suggstions on how to get this great machine back in to action? Kind regards, Jack from the Netherlands -- View on Narkive: http://narkive.com/be5gDQpo |

Kind regards, Jack from the Netherlands -- View on Narkive: http://narkive.com/be5gDQpo The problem is caused by the lack of pull-up resistors on the memory unit for the encoder wheel connections. You solder a 10k resistor from the connector from EACH wiper of the encoder wheel (except the common) to the -17v rail. This fixes this problem in my experience. Please use anti-static precautions when doing this mod as the IC's used on these boards are extremely static sensitive compared to modern IC's. |

rowe ami black magic with display malfunction / carousel keeps spinning
Hallo Harrold,
My problem has not been solved (i've contacted alan to help me) I do now know for sure that the problem lies within the memory unit. I have bought several r-82 computer-units, including a memory unit. Although my problem was solved, this 'new' unit had other problems insted. I will keep you (and other viewers) posted on the results. Should any of you be looking for parts/units for a r82? Please let me know. I bought a box full of several untested units for the r-82. Kind regards |

Of course these parts can be used on the following jukeboxes that have the Rowe Ami 1200 mechanism:- R-80S R-81 R-82 R-83 RI-2 CTI-1SC There are slight differences such as the RI-2 uses a smaller display but for test purposes any of the units can be used. I look forward to receiving your parts for repair. Regards Alan Alan Hood ami-man UK |
