Samuel Pepys Diary
Hello, my mother in law recently showed me her library and one of the
collections was very interesting. It is a Samuel Pepys Diary. I offered to look it up online to give her a quick reference on what it might be worth, but she told me I wouldn't be able to find much out. I was rather surprised when I couldn't find much about this collection. She says that she once heard that there were only 5 copies that anyone knew about. Here is what I know. It is copy written 1892, published in Boston by a Francis Niccolls. There were 1000 copies made. It is the first complete diary of Samuel Pepys that was published in the United States. The books are a somewhat light green color and there are 18 books total. It covers ten years from 1660 to 1669. My father in-law is trying to contact Cambridge University and I told them I would post on a few forums to see if anyone knew about this set. This set was a gift to her around 40 years ago and is what inspired her to start collecting books. She has never had a book appraiser in her library. However she is considering hiring one if her feedback is good enough about this diary. |
