Subject: ~~What years of wheat pennies are worth something~~
From: Yew B Date: 2/18/2004 3:56 PM Eastern Standard Time Message-id: I own a liquor store and have been saving wheat pennies for a couple years and would like to know if any are worth anything. I have some from every year from 1940-58 except for 1943 and some earlier than that 1909,10,16,18,19,20,28,34,35,37,39 they are in the condition I found them some worn some not Best way to determine if your wheat cents "are worth something" is to offer them to a friend for 10 times their basic value of one cent each. If the friend is interested you will know the value is at least 10 cents each. Generally, if the coins are fairly worn and you still can see Abe Lincoln's features, those cents MAY be able to be sold to a dealer at 2 to 3 cents each. If any of those coins from 1909 thru 1920 that you have show a mint mark "D" or "S" under the date, then maybe you can get a little more based on how much wear they have. Good luck. Steve |

If the 1909 or 1910 coins have "S" mintmarks under the dates, they would have value, depending on condition, but every one of the other dates is common, even if the coins are mintmarked, unless they are in uncirculated condition and pre-1940. The rest would be worth 1-10 cents, for the most part. See http://www.numismedia.com/fmv/prices...pricesgd.shtml if you want more info. In order to achieve these prices, you'd pretty much have to sell them on eBay with good pics and descriptions, and they couldn't have "problems", like scratches, corrosion, unattractive discoloration, nicks, gouges, etc. --Chris |

What years of wheat pennies are worth something The year isn't the only issue, there's also mintmarks and other things (such as the 1909 VDB's) I'm not going to go over the values for the entire run of wheat cents here, but I will tell you that you can find the information you seek in one book: "A Basic Guide Of United State Coins" By R.S. Yeoman (sometimes called 'the red book'). Check your library or local bookseller. 8-] Coin Saver |
