The Ancient Coin Collectors Guild [http://www.accg.us ], a volunteer organization dedicated to promoting free and independent collecting of coins from antiquity, seeks to foster an environment in which the public can confidently and legally acquire and hold any numismatic item of historical interest regardless of date or origin. The Guild strives to achieve this through education, political action, and consumer protection. The Guild has no paid employees and its directors or officers receive no compensation other than minimal travel expense reimbursement at actual cost for scheduled ACCG events. The Guild contracts for certain essential services including the editing of its newsletter, the services of an insurance agent, five lawyers, a press release service, a newsletter and email distribution firm, a merchant account banking service and an online billing service. Past activities have included: Legislative lobbying, including passage of the Wisconsin Resolution; FOIA and Cyprus/China Customs lawsuits challenging State Department secrecy; Public membership meetings annually in NY, Chicago and at the ANA Convention; Sponsorship of Roger Bland's presentations on the PAS scheme in Washington DC and at the Chicago Field Museum; Sponsorship of the Coins of Constantine Symposium in York; Paper and presentation for the Newcastle Portable Antiquities Conference, ACE grant and mentor program, Public Relations (media) program and Member online newsletter; ACCG Awards Program; CPAC hearing representation and communications with foreign governments; Coordination with ANA, Affiliate Member Clubs and other cultural property focused organizations Impact on the public image of ancient coin collecting: The successful ACE program and monthly press releases have done much to place ancient coin collecting in a positive light before people with little previous exposure. Within the hobby, ACCG has demonstrated that collectors can and will support a common cause. As an organization, the ACCG has achieved international recognition and is accepted as the preeminent voice of the ancient coin collecting community. Had the ACCG not been founded in 2004, at least three adverse congressional bills that failed would likely have been passed without resistance. Funding for legal challenges to import restrictions would not have materialized. The bridge between American collectors and PAS would not have developed as productively as it has. Collectors would have no unified voice and it would have been impossible to orchestrate 2,000 faxes to Washington in opposition to import restrictions. The State Department will continue its efforts to restrict importation of ancient coins, and an increase in prosecution of alleged offenses under the National Stolen Property Act and related laws is probable. We will most certainly see, and have already seen, an increased degree of interest on the part of U.S. Customs in the proper declaration and processing of entries for cultural property including coins. 3rd Annual ACCG Benefit Auction Call for Donations The 3rd Annual ACCG Benefit Auction will take place during September and donations of items for this event are being sought. The Benefit Auction has become an important source of revenue for the ACCG and helps the guild carry out its programs in defense of ancient coin collecting. Thanks to the generosity of donors, these auctions have raised more than $80,000 in the past two years. Most of this money has been used to fund the two ACCG lawsuits currently active against the U.S. State Department. It is no exaggeration to say that the numismatic hobby and trade are threatened by import restrictions and extremist campaigns to enact adverse legislation. While the ACCG's efforts have considerably diminished this attack, an even greater effort will be needed in the future. A strong auction will assure sustained and increased ACCG efforts in years to come. The only way to preserve our hobby as we have known it in the past is to be united in our efforts. Please be generous and send your donations to John Lavender, P.O. Box 926, Watkinsville, GA 30677. All ancient and medieval coins or related artifacts or books are welcome and appreciated. John is ready to catalogue now, so please mail at your earliest opportunity. A firm closing date has not yet been scheduled, but it will be mid September. There are no buyers fees and advertising, cataloguing and administration are donated by ACCG members. The only costs involved are billing service fees and bank merchant fees.
