John,

What types of coins do you think you would like to collect? Morgan silver
dollars? Buffalo nickels? Mercury dimes? An assortment? Many people
start by collecting less expensive coins and then graduate to coins that are
more sought after and rare.

One can find many, many coin varieties and options on eBay. Buying raw
coins can be fun if you don't spend too much on the coins or shipping.
Buying PCGS or NGC slabbed coins is a great way to build a collection that
will be more likely to hold its value.

Before buying any coins, you should, at the very least, buy the Whitman
Official Red Book or Blue Book or Black Book. All are available from Brent
Krueger, a reasonable online source for coin collecting supplies.

Decide more what you want to collect and come back here for additional help
and advice.
