Default Airport screeners steal coin collection

Among many other things. Just something to be aware of when traveling.

Right, and I have recently seen on the news that they are stealing a lot
more, and in full view of observation cameras. The article you cite has the
statement:

"We stand accountable for that. We have to," Dechant said. "The taxpayer
demands that, we owe them that. We stand accountable. We're not going to
tolerate it--they're gone."

But where the f--- have they gone? I'm sure not where they should have
gone...and that's in the slammer for a large number of years! But, I'm sure
they've gone where they were before, i.e., where they can come back and keep
doing it.

They're probably third shift security guards somewhere by now.

Maybe this will restore your goodwill in airport security.

Tell me about it. I flew to Iowa recently with my Whitman album type
collection. The airport screener had no problem with it after I told him
it was a coin book. On the way back however, I was pulled aside and
casually surrounded by security. They went through the routine and
ultimately did see the book of coins. The security guy in charge started
looking through it,,, and admiring it. I was thinking about how my
flight leaves in only 10 minutes and didn't say a word. Although I was
so anxious I just wanted to explode. Made the flight by 2 minutes. While
in Iowa, I almost bought a roll of silver quarters to take back with me.
That would have got me tackled by security when they saw it on the
X-ray. But this is not necessarily a bad thing. Solid metal objects
should be a red light to these guys. No complaints here.

Sadly, while airport screeners are strip searching well known politicians
who are no threat, known Moslems are still allowed on aircraft with little
or no scrutiny due to fears of racial profiling charges.

I will believe we are serious when all Arabs, other 3rd worlders and known
Moslems are given special attention. There also needs to be some attention
to the air crew from these 3rd world air lines, and a lot more attention to
airport workers, especially those who have access to secure areas.

I usually take rolls of coins in my carry-on luggage when I fly (rolls
of half and dollar coins to spend) and I've never been questioned about
the metal in my bag -- although the scanner frequently runs the scanner
back and forward a few times to get a good look.

Being Arab has nothing to do with it. What are they going to do in Arab
countries...give everyone 'special attention'?

The airlines all throughout the Middle East fly relatively trouble free and
those aircrafts are full of Arabs. They screen their passengers with
specially trained security thats sole pupose is to discretely search the
airport looking for suspicious individuals...they are trained to know how to
spot fear and nervousness and people who are generally acting out of the
ordinary. I believe this method is used in Isreali airports.

On top of that, terrorists can't plan these attacks in total isolation.
People just ignore the warning signs...for example the whole...taking flying
lessons and not wanting to know how to land and take off...I don't know if
its just the harsh judgement of hindsight...but surely that must have made
somebody think huh?

Besides all that, while everyone is looking to the skies for the next
attack, the terrorists are walking past and jumping onto a train loaded with
explosives and people. I had a nightmare the other night about a train that
was blown up in the US. The scariest part about the dream was that I
remember waking up and feeling like it was still possible to avoid it.

I am still amazed at the pathetic security at Australian airports. There is
next to none at domestic airports and I was amazed at how relaxed security
was when I flew internationally earlier this year. It took me longer to fill
out the departure form than it did to go through security (which consisted
of a walking through a metal detector). I believe that most of freight and
luggage is still not xrayed before being loaded onto airplanes. The irony is
that we apparently have cutting edge passport security with Australian
passports using new technology to make them harder to forge. Our government
seems more worried about those pesky foreiners getting in than our security.
