Ah, but as most would answer and as I already have: Who Cares??!!! rhetorical (snip) Among the voluminous junk he has said is his latest comment that the coin Web sites I've created are amateurish. This is much like an earlier comment from someone here who said that the articles I write for coin publications are written by others and that everybody who has ever responded to one of my online posts should get bylines for these articles. Exaggeration and hyperbole! Deceit and Lies! Strawman Argument, to boot. Reid struggles with the concept of attribution, film at 11. He did, at least, owe us the courtesy of identifying those 'online posts' as fishing expeditions, the results of which were going to be substituted for research. Nobody but me has written a single sentence of any of these articles, and for information I've relied on far more than posts to this newsgroup. It's all idiocy, idiotic flaming, with no thought given to the veracity of what is said. A.Gent says what I do is amateurish. I agree. The writing style is clunky and vague. The flow of thought is absent. The facts are questionable and the research was done by others, duped into participating in what was never identified as an Article for Hire. Reid Goldsborough, as an author, is the numismatic equivalent of paint-by-numbers. Alan 'publish and perish' |

"Reid Goldsborough" wrote in message ... A.Gent says what I do is amateurish. The word "amateurish" has two main meanings, done for payment and done well. Sorry Reid. I forgot it has to be obvious for you to grasp it. ========================================== amateurish adj : lacking professional skill or expertise; "a very amateurish job"; "inexpert but conscientious efforts"; "an unskilled painting" [syn: amateur, inexpert, unskilled] =========================================== Hint: When you reach for the dictionary, look at the "syn." section of the definition, not the "ant" section. Do you *really* think that "amateurish" means" * done for payment, or * done well? ...I've been writing for a living for 20 years, have written many hundreds of articles, two books, cowritten several others, have won two national writing awards and several small ones, write a nationally syndicated column, have written speeches and video scripts and radio commercials and so on. Decades ago, when I was working in publishing, your type (Reid) was referred to as a "C-Grade hack". This was not necessarily a perjorative. (Well, not *entirely*) It meant that you could string together a few hundreds of words without too many spelling or gramatical errors, and with a reasonable degree of readability. We would typically hire a C-grader if we had a backlog of (say) press releases to process, or some such similar routine work. A C-Grader can handle this work well, because it requires little or no imagination or creativity. C-Graders are cheaper, too. ...And I suppose I'm focusing too much lately on the junk of this one person, giving it play it doesn't deserve, so it's time to killfile him, something I should have done earlier. This time, try to remain true to your words, Reid. (Visions of a six-inch-tall Reid, jumping up and down, squealing "Me Me Me Me!") |

I think part of the beauty of a NG is the diversity of opinion, even with the occassional rant. If you want only people who agree with you, than start a moderated mail list. That's an option, but the other beauty of a NG is free choice. Some people think that ignoring select people somehow infringes on freedom of speach. Not. People can speak all they want. I can choose to listen if I want. Or not. I'm all for diversity of opinion. I love a good debate, or even a logical argument. I have no time for wasteful whining or chronic crotchiness, and there are a handful of folks here who do only these. These are the folks in my killfiles. Having read their drivel for some time before placing them there, I KNOW I'm not missing any good debate or logical arguments ... just ignoring the wasteful whining or chronic crotchiness. It's that simple. No need to start a moderated mail list. You don't use a sledge hammer to tap a picture hook in the wall ... although some here might suggest it is teh best method. Use the right tool for the job. Ignore people who try to convince you that your methods, that have worked for years, don't work. There's a bright line between substantive debate and ****y flamejunk. Sometimes things can get murky, with the former morphing into the latter. But some here engage largely in the latter, often deliberately trying to sabotage threads about subjects they have no interest in and know nothing about. The usual suspects. Hmmmm. I had been wondering where "****y" went. Hadn't seen it for several weeks. Thought you might have traded it in for "vitriol", but apparently "****y" was just in the shop for maintenance. Can you possibly use "****y" and "vitriol" in the same post for those of us who check these things? Bruce 'I couldn't drink one more Vitriol, sir, or I'll be ****y for sure' |

I can see how it would be really hard to tell us apart. There are so many of us to keep track of on here, and without a visual frame of reference to slot us as either "dogs" or "babes," how can we expect him to know which of us is which? *splorf* Well, I don't need degrading cheesecake photos to tell a teacher from a farmer. But they'd help. Post please? :-) Bruce (Ducking and running) Hmmmm. More proof that Reid only reads Reid, which speaks volumes to the quality of his reading list. What a narcissistic nerd!
