Some stamps do not appear in Scott catalog for several years after
they are released, anyone know why it takes so long?
One factor is that the Scott catalogs are issued one at a time and
eight months before the years end. The first two 2011 catalogs are
already in dealers showcase.
The Scott Stamp Monthly does not list some stamps for many-many moons
after first day of issue.

As mentioned, one reason is that the 2011 catalogs start being published
in early 2010. Another is that Scott doesn't list a stamp until they
have an actual stamp on hand in Sidney, Ohio, to look at. There's a lag
between the time the catalog is created, printed, and distributed. And
the postal authorities are often slow, as noted, in providing such stamps.

I was looking for a Greek stamp issued in December 2001 -- it did not
appear in the 2003 Scott catalog I had. Last stamp listed was for
November 2001. (Victor will know what I was looking for...)

I have a hard time believing Scott gets every stamp that is printed.
I have found a few stamps that were issued and are never available on
any
from any of the many sources I look at.

Perhaps Scott doesn't get every new issue stamp but that's their goal.
They do not want to list a "phantom" stamp that hasn't officially been
issued by a postal authority. Scott has mentioned this approach in one
or more articles in Scott Stamp Monthly within the last couple of years.

The article was from June 2008 issue of Scott Stamp Monthly in the "From
the Scott Editors" column. Martin Frankevicz states the following:

"Scott does not create listings without having the actual stamps in
hand. I want the actual stamps in hand so that we can measure
perforations and properly describe the items, and also to create scans
for out image archives."

Scott either acquires the stamps from new issue dealers, agents, or the
countries directly or borrows a copy to use.

That may be the reason the many fakes and freaks do not get a official
listing.
One would think Scott wold stumble somewhere along the way.
I will relax my position a little bit.
What about all the varieties listed in Scott? No-way-in-hell they get
copies of all those.
