Wow. I didn't realize that the instinct to attack birds ran so deep .

The only thing that didn't happen to Job was Windows.

LOL.

Mine sits on the table about two inches from the nib, and from time to
time, moves to about 1/8 of an inch away, sniffing *very* intently. I use
Private Reserve inks...

No idea why...

Dog ignores them - but I worry that she might get a hankerin' for
celluloid some day so I never leave a pen out overnight or when I
leave the house.

Our much loved and much missed friend, Ian, used to complain about the
cats chewing on his desk set pens. guess they were just the right
size for flossing.

I think most of the posting volume has migrated over time to Pentrace
and the Zoss list. I used to check this list daily, but check in only
a once or twice a week.

Most OT posts and rants are not allowed. Harder to SPAM. S/N ratio is
higher in what is "private space", at least private compared to
usenet.

I've noticed a disturbing development - sandwiched between the juvenile
rantings of a guy named Sheldon and the latest pictures of some young man's
underage sister getting it on with a same sex partner from a different
species while showering on the beach, there have been a few posts that
actually discuss fountain pens.

Mind you, these posts are now just a trickle and perhaps they'll go away so
that we can continue to enjoy some unknown movie star kissing some body part
of another unknown movie star while showering on the beach (Cleanliness is a
definite theme in these posts!), but left unattended there's no telling how
these fountain pen posts can multiply and squeeze out the foul language and
poorly disguised viruses we have come to love and expect.

Now last week I found myself on a beach, having one of my body parts kissed
by an unknown movie star when I came across a Gold Bond combo with a button
filler made of the most beautiful celluloid and fitted with a 14k gold nib
... .

Yeah, but... You can't read the Pentrace "list" off-line, and I don't
know of a good threader for the Zoss digest. I think most news servers
are running some sort of spam trap nowadays, and I find it easy enough
to ignore the rest. Waiting for each post to load separately over the
web is slow, torturously so when it turns out to be a Pentrace message
with a question mark at the end (rest of the message is a title).
Usenet has its advantages!

How much spam, OT stuff & rants you see is often a function of your
newsreader's filtering. In my opinion, the signal to noise ratio is
highest right here.

Sad to hear that. I found the Zoss list unpleasant after a series of
back-channel flames and dropped it. OT stuff, flames and rants are
prevented in the list itself, but some whackos just bombard you
provately if you say something they take exception to. I don't read
any Web-based boards because they are just painfully slow and often
encrusted with distracting crapola.

I agree with all of this. I'll stick to Usenet and a good newreader
that lets me killfile the idiots and bring the good stuff to the fore.

The Pentrace list would be fantastic if it was delivered in a digest
form instead of having to read it online.

I have had a broadband line for quite a few years. I never really
think about how long it takes to load Pentrace- its a relatively fast
web site - feels just about instantaneous to me

Of course, downloading Zoss is an offline function.

As to content - all I know is that I can post a question on Pentrace,
or Zoss, and have a few answers seemingly within minutes. I don't seem
to get those results here.

I do use a kill filter, but only for Sheldon. Never see his posts at
all....

But I don't need to do that at either other place.
