Machin Madness - A Revenue Cancel?
Here's a little ditty from a Machin lot. I have no clue where I picked it up, only that it looks like a "fee due" cancel. Not postal fee, unless there's a surcharge or something that Royal Mail does. Just thought I'd post this for the Machin lovers out there. http://www.adirondack-pc.com/MachinRev.jpg Tracy |

In this case it was probably because the item was over the minimum weight of, at that time, 60 grams. It was imposed by the revenue protection branch of Royal Mail. A very nice strike. Douglas |

Douglas Yes, it's what we get here instead of Postage Due stamps these days. The format seems to vary. Here is another one, maybe more later: http://cjoint.com/?gqkQwWUPe1 Chris |

Great description. So, there is a "revenuer" in the Royal Mail! |

I may be able to do that, if you send only one fennec and he doesn't poop. Hey, that's how I got it. Nope, I didn't cut it out for brevity. |

Douglas Yes, it's what we get here instead of Postage Due stamps these days. The format seems to vary. Here is another one, maybe more later: http://cjoint.com/?gqkQwWUPe1 Wow - I guess they told you, eh? *Still, a decent cancel and the sticker takes the place of the postage due stamp. *Probably using a PC or machine to crank out those stickers. I've only seen a sticker once, not that I get very many surcharged letters. This is what usually happens, except that they forgot to fill in the box with the fees: http://cjoint.com/?gquY1fvpaD as here on the left, with another round stamp example: http://cjoint.com/?gqu0kLahPh Sorry about the cut squares. I'm sure I've seen a round stamp with the charge written in, but can't find an example. Finally, a curious one: http://cjoint.com/?gqu2fJgwra It was a 175gm "large letter" which the sender intended to go 2nd class, 55p the time. But the meter was set wrongly at 44p (100gm 1st class). Normally when they realise this in time, the sender runs the whole batch through the machine again adding 11p. On this occasion someone has somehow found a rubber stamp that not only says: "we've paid the extra, honest" but also: "we meant to send it 2nd class anyway". The scrawl is not postal -- it was by someone who passed on the letter to me for the contents, not realising its philatelic rarity. Chris |
