People are stupid
I've totally lost my faith in the human race. People lie, cheat,
steal, kill, and worst of all overgrade coins. My cynicism runneth over. Here's an auction for an 1804 half cent. Cool year. The coin is holed, as some were, and some collect 'em holed (weirdoes). But the seller otherwise describes the coin using these words, capitalization, and punctuation: "NICE COIN!! ... nice original coin ... very nice looking coin ... great upgrade or addition to any collection." Here's the beauty: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=270156325309 I know. Marketing hype. But it's stupid when it's this far removed from reality. -- Email: (delete "remove this") Consumer: http://rg.ancients.info/guide Connoisseur: http://rg.ancients.info/glom Counterfeit: http://rg.ancients.info/bogos |

It's hard to imagine that this piece would be an upgrade to anybody's collection, as the seller says. But coin collecting isn't pretty, and a guy has to be tough in order to survive. Don't give up the ship and all that rot. James |

The seller just used the same text on all the descriptions. Go to their store and search for Draped Bust Half Cent (there are currently 5) All have the same description with the only difference being the year. I've noticed a lot of sellers seem to do the same thing, using the same template description for every auction. |

So why not be more efficient by using the same description for all of them. Makes sense to me. -- Email: (delete "remove this") Consumer: http://rg.ancients.info/guide Connoisseur: http://rg.ancients.info/glom Counterfeit: http://rg.ancients.info/bogos |

You cheated....you actually took a couple of minutes to search his listings for similar coins ;-) I was ready to call the seller lazy, but that would be unfair. He's got 2250 current auctions running so he's just using shortcuts. The really "stupid" person is the one who would be duped by his "NICE COIN" when he clearly states the coin is holed and includes clear images showing the poor, holed condition of the coin. He also provides a gallery image that would keep most people from clicking oon the auction link in the first place. Calling the seller stupid is stupid. |

For kicks, I recently put my well-used composite softball bat that suffered a 2" crack across the sweetspot up for auction on eBay. Started it at .99 with photos including a blowup of the cracked area. It sold for $53 plus $12.00 shipping. Beats tossing it in the trash can. Bruce |

I suspect you didn't describe this softball bat as being pristine. That's the issue -- hype, misrepresentation. There are, of course, lots of other examples of this on eBay and elsewhere too besides this 8104 half cent. And not just with coins either. Consumer Reports on its inside back cover has a department titled "Selling It" in which it reports examples of companies in general doing just this, using hype and other misrepresentation in ads and on packaging in selling products and services. It's amazing what people try to get away with. I've often thought it would be fun to do it here with coins, say once a week after going through new eBay and other coin auctions in areas I follow. But my coin interests have narrowed over time, so I don't see a lot of auctions for the kinds of coins that most collectors collect. -- Email: (delete "remove this") Consumer: http://rg.ancients.info/guide Connoisseur: http://rg.ancients.info/glom Counterfeit: http://rg.ancients.info/bogos |
