Default Whatever hasppen to the Guy

Phil,

Yes that would be me that posted that article, and I did make the
pilgrimage, along with my wife and son.
Here is the scoop. When I got to Calif. I visited with my Mother for 4
days, and then we headed off to look at the cache. We went to where my
friend lives and he had at his house probably somewhere in the
neighborhood

of 20 or so 50 MM ammo cans filled with all denominations from Lincoln's
to

Morgan's. After 2 days my wife had, had enough of my friend and I going
through coins, that I had to take her and the son to Sacramento to fly
home

to Florida.
Well I went back and stayed 3 more days. I looked at some many coins
that I

left cross-eyed, and I only got to look at not even quite 1/3 of the
total
{it's split 3 ways... my friend, his mother, and sister}
All I can say is that I was very surprised indeed, that his father had
taken to time to separate all dates and MM's and everything rolled. I
read
some of the posts and they say something about laughing that this was
possible........ well it was possible. They actually had to get a back
hoe
to dig up the container,
before they could get into it. Most of the ammo cans were coated in
cosmoleen, which is a waterproofing material the Gov't uses {military},
as
he was also a major Gov't surplus dealer and very well known in the
Sacramento area.I would say that the majority of the coins were
Franklin's.

Walkers, quarters, Merc's. 90% of the silver is all coins that he kept
when
he operated a very large flea market in Stockton Calif. for about 15
years. The condition of the all the coins in general were from VF to AU.
There were many rolls from Brinks that were mostly Kennedy's. He also
has
so many boxes of silver bullion coins that it's ridiculous, and they are

all in MS.
Gold coins however were not what I expected, my friend exaggerated a
little

bit about that. What his father was mostly into saving were Mexican 50
pesos..... which were all great but I was looking for the horde of
St.Guad's. He did have a few rolls of them mostly all AU to better.
Lincoln's.................... I didn't think it was possible that a
person
could save that many, and I only got to see less than a third of the
true
amount.
Here is what I brought home for me.................... to sell, do
whatever

I want to do with them.

10 rolls of '64 Kennedy's MS
5 rolls of Standing Lib. Quarters
10 rolls of Wash. quarters {silver various dates/mm's}
20 rolls of Merc's
50 rolls of Lincoln's..... various dates........ all "S" mint mark.
10 50 pesos coins all 1945...at least AU
When I got to the airport everything went very well at the reservation
desk, up until the point where I was asked how many bags I wanted to
check.

I checked my suitcase on the plane, but took the small suitcase with the

coins with me on the plane. Well when I got to the security checkpoint
this

is where things got kind of tough. When the bag went through the x-ray
the
woman behind the counter gave me one of those, this is not your day
looks.
She immediately called a man over and they pulled me off the line.I
heard
her make some kind of comment that "somebody must have had a great day
in
Reno".
They proceeded to take every roll of coins out of my bag. Well they
weren't

real happy with me when begged them not to open the rolls of Kennedy's.

Everything else was loose rolls so I had no problem with that, but not
the
half dollar rolls.......... those I didn't want to be opened until I got

home. Well the man proceeded to open the first one anyway, and took all
the

halves out, which I had to put back in. After that he was OK, as he
could
see that it was just a bunch of rolled coins, and no hidden explosive
devices.
Well I have been going through them slowly since I have been home, and
haven't found the rolls of '09 S VDB's that I was hoping for, or all the

rest of the precious dates and MM's that i hoped would be there, but I
have

found many great coins, and my albums are getting filled. I will be
selling

some of the coins soon, so keep an eye out. I will make a post to the NG

when I do this, but it won't be for a while.
I did offer to sell a roll of the Kennedy's to a guy last week that
posted
a request for anybody that had any, and haven't seen a reply from him
yet.
Next summer when I go on my annual gold mining trip, I will be looking,
and

bringing back more coins, as he is going to let me sell all that I want
to.

I have talked with both his mother and sister and they have given me the

same answer. The main thing is, that there are certain circumstances
regarding these coins. The main thing is that his mother is heavily into

developing property and she could give a hoot less about a bunch of
coins.
Her daughter and my friend are also both so wealthy, and have other
things
going, that they like their mother really don't think about the coins
much............... to them, they are "just there." There is also a
story
surrounding the coins that involved the father in a rather gruesome way.

Seems that he was beaten up and almost killed in 1980 over the coin
stash.
I remember my friend telling me his Dad got robbed and beat up, but
there
was no mention of the coins at that time. This is a friend I have had
since

10 years old, and we are both 53 now, but I am not family, I am still
just
a friend of the family. I knew I should have married his sister all
those
years ago....G Naw just kidding! So when they get around to it, they
will let me get deeper into the pile, but it will be at their time and
date.......... unfortunate for me.
Like I said I will be selling some of the coins online, and have made
contact with a person in this NG already about the bullion as he lives
out
that way close to where they are. I'm going to take a bunch to the
Hollywood Coin Show this next Sunday and see what I can do with the
Lincoln's.

Well it wasn't quite the Treasure of the Century like I thought, but
then
again, I haven't seen but just a taste of the entire stash, so I'm just
going to keep my fingers crossed until I can get a better hand on the
situation.

John

The term "bullion coins" can sometimes mean simply
"common coins having no premium regardless of condition".
:
: bit about that. What his father was mostly into saving were Mexican 50

Gee, I'd give a hundred dollars for a real 50 peso.

: 10 rolls of '64 Kennedy's MS

The 64's may be the highest population US silver
coin in mint state, a big coin dealer will likely have
64's as large proportion of their bullion (meaning worth only
the silver content) coins.

: 5 rolls of Standing Lib. Quarters
: 10 rolls of Wash. quarters {silver various dates/mm's}

Same with the 64's here, it will take a good
eye to separate the higher mint state from the ordinary
and damaged.

: 20 rolls of Merc's

Except for certain dates these make up a large
part of the bullion coins available 10 years ago, but
Roosevelts may be mainly what can be had for 4 times.

: 50 rolls of Lincoln's..... various dates........ all "S" mint mark.

The S mints are underpriced on the West coast and
overpriced on the East coast. Hope there are lots of
teens.

: 10 50 pesos coins all 1945...at least AU

Does anybody know a good way to tell if they
are solid gold or not? :-)
I think precious metal dealers have a special
setup to compare the weight in air to the weight
under water.

I know you are having more fun than I am.
