Redesigned $1 Bill?
I know people get tired of these posts about the $1 bill redesign over and over
again but I heard a rumor on the wheregeorge.com website someone posted that went like this: "Yesterday I was speaking to a manager of local McDonalds. He said that a bank teller he spoke with told him two strange things that I don't believe: 1 - Bill cleaning: Banks will be cleaning bills soon. Any writing or stamps on bills will be cleaned off in a solution of some kind. I highly doubt banks would take the time to clean every bill with writing of some kind on them. (How many bills do you come across with numbers or letters written on them?) 2 - Redesign of the $1bill: The portrait will be changed to be similar to the other bills and color security features will be added to the $1 bill. The last I read, the BEP was not planning on changing the $1 bill as it was not counterfeited enough to warrent the extra costs. I know I should consider the source (no offense to any fast food managers), but has anyone heard about either of these two changes planned for the $1 bill?" What do you guys think of these rumors? I thought it was interesting, but doubt its true. I could see redesigning the $1 bill ( and $2 bill) to match the higher denominations (large portrait, simple boarder, and low-vision numeral), but I can't see them adding the color. Tom |

2 - Redesign of the $1bill:

The last I read, the BEP was not planning on changing the $1 bill as it was not counterfeited enough to warrent the extra costs. The redesigns of the 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 didn't warrant the extra costs either but that didn't stop them. The old bills were in fact more complicated, making them harder to counterfeit I'd imagine; not to mention they're still in circulation so anybody who wanted to counterfeit a 20 dollar bill could just do one of the old ones. |

Touche. I'm constantly amazed that the number of bank tellers that know
NOTHING about coins and currency in general. Check it out: "They don't make $2 bills anymore." "What new nickels?" "Sacagawea dollars are gold." "Blue (or Red) Seal notes are all counterfeits." "Alexander Hamilton was a President of the United States." "What's this (reference to an Ike dollar)?" On the plus side, though, if tellers were as knowledgable as us, we wouldn't get near the cool stuff we get from banks. Jerry My Vault Manager is a big silver dollar collector who one bragged that he'd gotten a CC Morgan a in deposit. "Scott Stevenson" writes: I would say that "consider the source" should apply to the bank teller. To be charitable, they (as a group) are not the most accurate of sources concerning what's going to happen with the nation's coins and currency. |

Touche. I'm constantly amazed that the number of bank tellers that know NOTHING about coins and currency in general. Not numismatic, but the last teller I dealt with had a very hard time counting out my money. I was getting back $256 in cash and she had to count it out at least five times before she got it right. I think the various denominations of the bills was confusing her for some reason. I was not trying anything funny like asking for $2 bills or anything like that, just $50s, $20s, $10s etc. |

Some bank tellers HATE writing or stamping on bills.
They similarly HATE the people who do it. They believe that it is "illegal" and even think the people who do it are "evil". SO, to drive the "evil" people insane, they make up stories and spread them. That way the "evil stampers" will start hitting their heads like "Rain Man" and scream out "Serious Injury"! The perfect story is that all bills will be washed and the ink will be removed. How stupid. how could anyone believe this? Do you have any idea what that would cost? Do you have any idea how the "Evil ink" will be magically washed off the bill while the "Good ink" remains on the bill? There will be NO redesign of the FBI-RD. Eventually it will be discontinued. Deal with it. Now the only true rumor is that they will be melting down the "RARE APOLLO XI DOLLAR COINS FROM THE 1900's". I just don't know when. Better start hoarding them all before they get melted. ;-) -Fred Shecter http://cgi6.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...shreadv ector -- """Remove "zorch" from address (2 places) to reply. I'm constantly amazed that the number of bank tellers that know NOTHING about coins and currency in general A branch manager of a Major bank told me he does not ask his tellers to be knowledgeable in US Currency or coins. It's just not their job. Their job is to manage deposits, transfers, and withdrawals. Anything else, a bank specialist is called upon (for the likes of opening / closing accounts, loans, buying CDs, etc) Tellers are elaborate ATMachines. Or, ATMachines are elaborate tellers. 8-| - Coin Saver |

Well Fred, if the $1 rag will be discontinued eventually, when do you think
that will be? I'm just curious as to what you think. Tom |

Well, if Jim Benfield had not passed away and continued to work on overcoming the
obstacles to Golden Dollar circulation (like sorting out and melting down the SBA/Apollo XI dollars), I was betting on 2004. That was not to be.... If Kerry wins, then you can bet that the Crane folks will have his ear and they will not allow the FBI-RD to be discontinued. If ending the production of the FBI-RD is too scary for our elected representatives, then it's up to US to do the other part of the job: Keep ordering dollar coins from the bank and use them for everything. Contact vending operators who do not have stickers on their machines (that's most of them) or whose machines will not accept dollar coins (very few by now thanks to replacement of equipment). Keep ordering dollar coins from the bank and use them for everything. Frequent those dollar coin self car washes. I've seen a LOT more of them lately. The dollar coins save the operators tons of $$$ since they don't have to visit as often to refill thousands of Quarters in the change machine. A load of dollar coins last for a long time. Keep ordering dollar coins from the bank and use them for everything. Use dollar coins in the self-check stands at your local stores. Here in the Los Angeles area we have them in every Home Depot and they are installed in some Wal-Marts and they are installing them in more and more Albertson's supermarkets and a few Ralph's (the local Kroger affiliate). Keep ordering dollar coins from the bank and use them for everything. (Notice how I keep repeating that one?) -Fred Shecter http://cgi6.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...shreadv ector -- """Remove "zorch" from address (2 places) to reply.
