FA: More Lots -- FUN Online Sale
Here are some cool varieties, some more of my San Francisco quarter
eagles and a few others. Some of these represent a singular chance in a decade to acquire at auction. The varieties are in ANACS holders because only ANACS grades them and their graders, at least at the time, were very good at these tough varieties. Lot 25089: 1864 PCGS MS62CN Cent http://coins.heritagegalleries.com/c...5&Lot_No=25089 I sure had this old rattler slab for a long time. Great choice example of a copper-nickel Indian Head. Pretty decently struck considering that many are weak because of the common striking pressures on that hard alloy. I thought I has identified a Flynn number on this one but don't see my notes. Heritage images should enable a specialist to determine that easily enough anyway. Lot 25317: 1864 Large Motto Breen-2376 ANACS MS60BN Two Cents http://coins.heritagegalleries.com/c...5&Lot_No=25317 This is the KF-L5 "Triple Punched Date" variety. I believe there are only about a half dozen or so of these in ANACS mint state slabs. This fascinating and very visible variety is most commonly found well-circulated. It is brown in color but with still quite a bit of residual red on the surfaces of both sides. Lot 25320: 1864 Large Motto KF-L22 ANACS MS64RB http://coins.heritagegalleries.com/c...5&Lot_No=25320 I believe this is the finer of only two red brown examples of this rare repunched date variety. As probably the finest known, this is destined for a world-class specialist's cabinet. A type collector might even consider this coin for the Large Motto Two Cent slot as it has the additional variety appeal. It is rare overall and extremely rare in high mint state. Lot 25398: 1882 F-05 PM-17.6 ANACS MS61 Shield Nickel http://coins.heritagegalleries.com/c...5&Lot_No=25398 This is an EXTREMELY RARE repunched date variety and AFAIK the finest by far example of of only a few known. This is the ONLY mint state specimen slabbed by ANACS. The only other one slabbed by them is an AU50. I have had it off the market, like several others in these auctions, for a decade and this may be a specialist's only chance in their collecting time to acquire one of these, and the likely finest one at that. I am posting these here primarily because the Heritage cataloguer failed to express the rarity of most of my varieties. Looks like the attribution was a ho-hum detail to them rather than the overriding point of value. (Some were not even put in the sale that were unique or nearly unique because they didn't make the grade cut as a normal coin of the date would be expected to.) Lot 25607: 1841-O Breen-3025 ANACS AU50 Half Dime http://coins.heritagegalleries.com/c...5&Lot_No=25607 This coin has so much going for it. I forget if this is the Valentine-2 or the ultra rare Valentine-5, though I believe it is the former as only one V-5 is known. This is one of the three known psotions of the small round o mint mark varieties of the date, produced with leftover dies from 1840. ANACS has never seen a mint state one of these and has graded three circulated ones: two at this grade (AU50) as Breen-3025 and one VG as V-2. The date itself is one of the toughest of the series too. To top that off, this specimen is outstanding in eye appeal with magnificent original album toning on both sides. A great opportunity coin when I acquired it and now for the top bidder. Lot 25620: 1859-O NGC MS63 Half Dime http://coins.heritagegalleries.com/c...5&Lot_No=25620 Another from my choice set of New Orleans half dimes (the 1856-O is in the signature sale). One of the last dates struck in New Orleans thanks to the US Civil War. This is a tough coin in this state, but not as challenging as the 56-O. The coin shows a couple ancient fingermarks on the obverse and outstanding annular toning on the reverse. It spent a lot of time in an old album. Lot 25648: 1857-O Breen-3305 ANACS AU58 Dime http://coins.heritagegalleries.com/c...5&Lot_No=25648 Very rare repunched date, with a large O, heavy date and closed 5. ANACS certified a single uncirculated one (MS63) and three AUs: AU58 (this one), AU55 (last sold in the 2002 NY Bullet Sale) and an AU53. Lot 25656: 1879 Breen-3415 ANACS MS60 Dime http://coins.heritagegalleries.com/c...5&Lot_No=25656 Extremely rare. First, the date itself only had 15,000 business strikes. This was noted long ago and thankfully more were saved than even higher mintage CC dimes. That is all academic when it comes to this variety though, with a repunched 18. Used to be, when I got it, this was the only example slabbed by ANACS. There are now also two prooflikes (MS63PL and MS62PL). While it is possible they are really proofs, ANACS is very good at these varieties. Nonetheless, this is an very important offering. I will only let it go anywhere near the current bid at Heritage if I know the high bidder is a serious collector who will appreciate its importance. Otherwise, I'll just bid it myself and keep it. Lot 25880: 1846 Breen-3966 ANACS AU58 Quarter http://coins.heritagegalleries.com/c...5&Lot_No=25880 The "Dropped 6" repunched variety. It is very rare overall and this is the finest certified by ANACS and possibly the finest known. This is a definite "must have" specimen for many variety collectors and possibly the only chance to get it in this coveted grade. It is also attractive and very original. I sure hope specialists take notice of the opportunity. I want this to find a good new home. Lot 25886: 1876 Breen-4080 ANACS MS60 Quarter http://coins.heritagegalleries.com/c...5&Lot_No=25886 Very rare Type I reverse variety. This is the only mint state one attributed by ANACS. The only circulated one they have seen is in VF35. Lot 26357: 1949-S NGC MS65FBL Half Dollar http://coins.heritagegalleries.com/c...5&Lot_No=26357 Solid gem that really doesn't need a lot of explanation here. I really wanted to discuss the undercatalogued rare varieties from my consignment. Lot 26397: 1952 NGC PR67 Half Dollar http://coins.heritagegalleries.com/c...5&Lot_No=26397 Same thing here. Don't need to add details. Lot 26473: 1877-S Breen-5814 ANACS AU55 Trade Dollar http://coins.heritagegalleries.com/c...5&Lot_No=26473 Very rare tiny s variety (used the quarter mint mark punch). There are about a dozen mint state examples out there. Lot 27341: 1867-S NGC XF40 Quarter Eagle http://coins.heritagegalleries.com/c...5&Lot_No=27341 The first of my San Francisco quarter eagles appearing in the online sale (others in the Signature Sale). This is a good, collectible grade to buy the issue in. S mint Liberty $2.5s are quite difficult to find overall in XF and higher. Lot 27342: 1872-S NGC XF45 Quarter Eagle http://coins.heritagegalleries.com/c...5&Lot_No=27342 This one even has a shot as an AU upgrade as will likely be noted by floor bidders in Orlando. Lot 27447: 1849/49 NGC XF45 Half Eagle http://coins.heritagegalleries.com/c...5&Lot_No=27447 Discovered at the 1963 FUN show auction (lot 4224), Breen said this variety is extremely rare. It is more likely very rare. NGC has graded 18, with 7 of those in mint state. ANACS has 19, but many are likely duplicates that were crossed over at NGC. I cannot believe Heritage missed the 49/49 in their lot listing, particularly since it is right there on the holder's tag! This is a great coin from the year of the gold rush. Excellent and ovbious doubled date that should please a lot of collectors. I have had this for many years. Lot 27565: 1878-S PCGS XF40 Eagle http://coins.heritagegalleries.com/c...5&Lot_No=27565 A desirable low-mintage $5 gold coin in a PCGS old green holder that just screams "upgrade" as I think the strike (common for the date) was mistaken for more wear than there is on the coin. If interested in the date, look and be your own judge. I tucked this away a long time ago and didn't appreciate it as I was into my Morgan DMPLs. It should find a more worthy home. Lot 27619: 1899 Breen-7061 ANACS AU50 Eagle http://coins.heritagegalleries.com/c...5&Lot_No=27619 Breen says this is very rare. ANACS has slabbed a dozen of them in mint state and two in AU, including this one. There are probably plenty unattributed in holders still. It is probably very scarce to rare, but nonetheless desirable. |

Was fun to collect them myself but sure wished Heritage had promoted
the varieties better. Perhaps I should have eBayed them myself. Well, Heritage's big sales get a lot of specialists' eyeballs anyway. Thanks to everyone for looking at my auction posts and I wish everyone a happy, prosperous, and fulfilling 2006! |

Yeah, and I got your "fun" thingy. FUN happens to be a reference to
the Florida United Numismatists coin show in Orlando this week which is fairly important to many dealers and collectors this time of year. I need a little unfriendly reminder occasionally as to why I stopped posting and reading on RCC as much as I used to. |
