China or Japan
Hi all
Please have look at http://cjoint.com/?fDv0Tadazc Are these assumptions correct? 1) Stamps with the 6 characters as on the bottom of the left stamp come from China 2) Stamps with the 'sun' in the center top as on the right stamp are from Japan Thanks in advance Jan ================================================== ====================================== http://www.jandoggen.org http://www.beautyofpeople.com http://www.puddingclub.nl |

Just compare the six letters on the Chinese stamp with any in the catalogue. Stamps from the People's Republic begin with a square with a vertical line through it; stamps from Taiwan end with it. Your red stamp is from a set of 1964-66, 12 stamps with 4 repeating designs, Stanley Gibbons numbers 2168-2177a, yours being No 2173 -- the Great Hall of the People. 2) Stamps with the 'sun' in the center top as on the right stamp are from Japan Correct again. SG No 316 in a set of 19, 131-331 + 4 coil stamps 332-335 of 1937-40. Later stamps have NIPPON in Western letters also. Some early designs of these small definitives were repeated with NIPPON added. My own guideline is that the left-most character (looks a little like a double-headed axe and fairly easy to remember and see) marks stamps as from China and the sun (actually a chrysanthemum) means they are from Japan. Hello Jan, this was offered to me, in February 2004 from "Christopher C" hope this helps. http://cjoint.com/data/fEcgRenO1n.htm BTW. the Chrysanthemum flower on Japanese stamps (your "sun") always have 16 petals, if you find one with 17 they are forgeries. Yes, the 16-petaled chrysanthemum for Japan, and a five-petaled orchid (almost always, and frequently in the same location) for Manchukuo: http://cjoint.com/data/fEddbeieEL.htm -- Joshua H. It needs to be born in mind, though that the characters transliterated as 'Zhong Hua Min Guo' (Republic of China) also appear on the pre-1949 KMT issues for China, and of course, were carried over to Taiwan when the KMT decamped there in 1949. The 16 petalled chrysanthemum is the prerogative of the Emperor, by the way. Commoners are not permitted 16 petals. Tony of the Antipathies |

Yep, that did come up on later post, http://cjoint.com/data/fEkeogtX4Q.htm The 16 petalled chrysanthemum is the prerogative of the Emperor, by the way. Commoners are not permitted 16 petals. |
