Default My Jutebox plays first record in 30 years

Well my Seeburg 148 played its first song in over 30 years tonite. I just couldn't wait to rebuild anything I just let it warn up for a minute, watched carefully and smelled around. I had the flip side to the records that were loaded and let me say the flip sides look mint so away we went. There was no working auto play I just laid a 78 down by The Ink Spots, (The Ink Spots can you believe it) and she played. It got louder and louder till I had to turn the master volume down. I am so overwhelmed to have heard my parents classics I can't tell you. I am hooked and this Trashcan will never play anything but 78s. I can't wait to let my mom (now 83) here some of her old records. I've always loved music from King Crimson to Maria Callas to Marty Robbins now is time to enjoy Big Band and others the way they were ment to sound........But I have gotten a price of 425.00 to rebuild my amp and receiver, does that sound reasonable and how can one tell if they truly need rebuilding?

The amp must be rebuilt. Capacitors do not age well. If you continue to
use it as is you will smoke the transformers and ruin the tubes.

I cannot comment on the price you were given since I'm not familiar with the
amp this model.

That amplifier is at least 60 years old. All the wax/paper tubular
capacitors and the electrolytic capaitors _must_ be replaced. It uses
several 'twist prong' can style capacitors which are very expensive to
replace. Remember, rebuilding and recapping an amplifier eats up a lot
of someone's time (anywhere from 3 to 8 hours labor) which adds up.
Sometimes a resistor or two (or more) have drifted off value and must
also be replaced.

I would do the amp, common electronic components (especially
capacitors) just dont last this long without problems.
Its possible to do it yourself, but with things like this, its much
better left to a specialist with experience with valve circuitry.

I cant comment on the price, as I dont know the work involved in this
model but these days nothing is cheap anymore, and replacing
components properly in valve circuits is very labour intensive.

Thank you I thought the worst thing that could happen was to do damage to a part that was being rebuilt anyway. I'll be sure and have work done prior to turning unit back on.

Perhapse I'll take a look at leaving the receiver alone or are they as tempermental as the amp?

Thats neet . I also enjoy 78`s on one of my jukeboxes . 78`s are fairly
easy to find in thrift shops .I just bought a stack of about 50 for 5$

The price you mention is probably top dollar ... but you will probably
never have to mess with them again . I would make sure the amp estimate
includes any tubes needed .

As for playing it the way it is a few times and it sounds ok its
probably ok . I have repaired several jukeboxes for other people who
have been using them on original non rebuilt amps and have never seen
any damaged . Make sure the right amp fuses are in place and if the
sound quits or gets wierd shut it off .

yup!
And always remember that jukeboxes run on smoke. If you see the smoke leak
out, they will stop working!
As a side note, there is a "parts" trashcan juke for sale as a buy it now on
Ebay, with a "make an offer" feature. Other than a big chunk out of the dome
it looks really good. If someone is looking for one to restore or for a set
of red plastics it might be a good deal!
