Binding Queries
I have recently begun buying an increasing amount of antiquarian books in
poor condition - generally the insides of the book are very good or immaculate, but he bindings range from adequate missing labels, to downright poor! I had a good weekend rebacking two books (1884 Facsimile of the 1st edition of Rasselas) originally bound in paper over boards using heavy stock paper and recreating labels on the PC - however this will obviously only work for rebinding originally boarded copies - Ive just bought a set of 8 vols of Decline and Fall to do the same with, but hopefully be able to salvage the original labels! Two recent purchases of leather are a set of Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (12 vols) and a set of the Works of Pope (6 vols). Each has one volume with loose boards and so will have to be professionally rebacked, but the remainder are simply missing labels. So has anyone experienced purchasing tooled leather labels from a binder and affixing them yourselves? - I have heard that simple Flour paste is adequate and can be removed if required at a later date. Are binders willing to do this, and more important on my meagre budget, do they charge a great deal? Many thanks, Tom L-M |

Tom -
You might try joining and posting your query to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bookbinding/ which is an informal group of binders, both pro and amateur. I've been reading and learning there for a while now, though I haven't posted but a few questions. Good luck! Dear Tom,
Binders who have to buy the labels from someone else double and charge you $50.00 if, for example they paid $25.00 for them. You are better going back to the source and buying them there.
