Default How many stamps on a world wide basis?

I have been looking around on the net including the fine site of the UPU,
FIP and so on, but unfortunately in vain.

Can anyone here help med find information as to the total number of postage
stamps issued on a yearly basis during the latest years, say 2000 - 2006.
Thank you, Svend

G'day Svend,
there is a company that audits issues, and from memory
they are allied to one of the major stamp catalogues.
Should further advice fail to surface here in the next few days
I can dig it out for you.

The last audit I have was around 1985

I ran a quiz here a few weeks ago, (and nobody answered
regarding the issues of 1931

Hi, Svend

A total of 17,836 stamps and souvenir sheets were released in 2000,
according to Linn's calculations, which are based on the new-issue survey
prepared by the editors of the German-language stamp magazine
Michel-Rundschau.
The Michel-Rundschau survey reports that Liberia's 771 total (in 2000)
comprises 677 stamps and 94 souvenir sheets, with a total Michel catalog
value of $1,415.
Already in 1972, during its most prolific year, Fujeira issued about 700
stamps and 200 sheets (!).
http://www.pwmo.org/articles/undesirable-stamps.htm

An approximative figure for the whole period 2000-2006 would be of at least
100,000 stamps and sheets... Please note that the illegal stamps aren't
included in this figure.

I think that we cannot complain that we have a too limited choice ;-)

Provided that your 'choice' is based on -=quantity=-.

Select by well designed and appropriate issues - about (or less than) 1%
of
the figure quoted.

OK, then that means nevertheless about 1000 new stamps + sheets that are
appropriate (in your eyes), and this _each_year_.

Now what are you personally badly missing?

Thank you Victor. Just the sort of figure I was looking for. I still wonder
however what the trend is through 2000 - 2006?

As for the point about "well designed and appropriate" I fully agree. Many
collectors have reacted to the unrestricted flow of new stamps and in stead
of continuing to keep up a country collection they cut it short, specialise
in a limited period or simply join the postal historians. I wonder when this
tendency will make the issuing countries cut down the numbers. If collectors
do not buy a major part of the new stamps what is the point!.

Have a nice evening all of you
Svend

Bonjour Victor,

If I recall correctly, Michel performs this kind of survey each year (I
have seen regularly the results in the French philatelic magazines)
But I am not at home and cannot search in those old magazines.

I imagine that Michel publishes those figures somewhere on its site ?

I am not able to search for that myself (I do not understand German
language)

Could you try to find that information for the benefit of the group ?

Many thanks in advance !

(If this information is not on the web, I'll search my magazines when
back at home, in the beginning of october. I should be able to find the
number of stamps issued in the whole world in the different years 2000
to 2005 or 2006. Thus answering the query from Svend on the trend)

Bonjour Pierre.

A couple of years ago I did a translation job for a friend in Buenos Aires
and a similar question arose but limited to Spanish language countries. As I
recall my friend referred me to Michel and some German URL but because the
answer was not part of the work-document, just part of an email exchange, I
no longer have the information. But it definitely WAS Michel I was referred
to.

Bonjour Tony,

Merci beaucoup !
Thanks for confirming Michel company as the source of this kind of
information.
Now, I'll wait it is a decent hour in Switzerland (3:45 a.m. now in
Brittany) to allow Victor reading my post and possibly answering it.

Scott Monthly runs an article on this every year. It's in this October's issue.

The tables in the article cover 2004-6. Since they report these figures on an annual basis, a trip
to your library might turn up the 2000-2003 figures.

Bonsoir Pierre,

I've tried to find on the Web the data for other years but couldn't find
them, unfortunatly.

I hope that I can survive without these data till october, :-) and I wish
you a good time there where you are.

Amicalement,
