Let's Have Some Fun with Urban Legends
I was going to post this in a different thread, but I thought it would go off
on a tangent, so I decided to start a new one. :-) With the American Bison nickel reverse coming in early 2005 I see the potential for some really great Urban Legends. U.S. MINT TO RECALL 2005 AMERICAN BISON NICKEL Based on the growing number of complaints by coin dealers and the public, the U.S. Mint recently decided to recall all of the 2005 American Bison nickels that were issued earlier this year. There was so much confusion between the Bison reverse nickels and the older style "Buffalo" nickels that the Mint decided to recall the newer nickels to eliminate the confusion. Coin dealers throughout the country have complained that many people are bringing in the older Buffalo nickels thinking that the Indian Head obverse was a current error, only to find out that they were common circulating coins of the past and not worth a trip to Bermuda. The public has also complained that they are being taken by unscrupulous salesmen (in print and on television) who are selling the older style Buffalo nickels as errors for outrageous prices. One individual in particular stated that he bought "a new error nickel without a date" for $10, only to learn that it was worth five cents. When the new nickels were issued and the confusion began, an unprecedented joint effort by members of various coin collecting newsgroups and message boards (rec.collecting.coins, CoinTalk, Coin People, and the PCGS and NGC forums in particular) was made to inform the public against purchasing these so-called error coins. Unfortunately, this effort was seen by many as a spam campaign by those looking to corner the error coin market. Public pressure has forced all of these forums off of the internet. When asked why they decided to inform the public, (insert forum here)'s (insert name here) said, "The public is gullible and will believe anything. We tried to help, and look what happened. Screw 'em." Jerry This ought to be good. :-) |

With the expiration of the ban on the sale of assault weapons, two
heavily-armed bands of futurists are behind barricades in the streets preparing for numismatic Armageddon, brought on by disputes over the grading of the new buffalo nickels. Contention runs high between the 2/3 horn faction and the full-horn faction for the "very fine" designation, to be applied when these nickels have seen circulation for a year or so. It is expected that the combatants will be crushed mercilessly by dumping truckloads of broken slabs upon them. "We're simply not going to tolerate any more disagreements over the grading of nickels," said the owner of a popular grading service. "Jerry Dennis" wrote in message ... Here is one that will get the Oregon Coast nickle recalled: Ocean was spelled ocian in the journal, but it is spelled ocean on the coin. Whoopsie mint made a mistake, like when they put that big bad gun on the Massachusetts quarter. Dave --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. When asked why they decided to inform the public, SAH's on air personality said, "The public is gullible and will believe anything. We tried to help, and look what happened. Screw 'em." sounds about right. |
