PING Jim Higgins ( Mesembria In Thrace)

ups.com... gogu wrote: I don't know, as I said the only info I had was from that old Italian documentary, maybe I am confusing names. If you say he had children then you must be right about Moreschi:-) Only Mrs. Caruso knows for sure. ;-) How true. I have two coins from Mesembria. I always assumed that they were from the town on the Black Sea, but now I'm not so sure. More research is needed. To wildwinds.com I shall go... http://members.aol.com:/ankaaz/mesembriaeux.jpg http://members.aol.com:/ankaaz/private/mesembria.jpg I hope you can see these. Some non-AOLers may have problems. Apologies in advance. No problems here, I could see them all right. I think there is a big confusion between the two towns and that's due their identical name, so I believe you should do some more research to see from what Mesembria your coins are coming. But from a quick net search I can see that most dealers do not say from which Mesembria their coins come and every site is just stating "coin from Mesembria". I believe they do not know that there are two Mesembrias... -- E' mai possibile, oh porco di un cane, che le avventure in codesto reame debban risolversi tutte con grandi puttane! To note here that the coin he is presenting is from the Aegean Mesembria! You definitely should research the origin of your coins:-) -- E' mai possibile, oh porco di un cane, che le avventure in codesto reame debban risolversi tutte con grandi puttane! The "guy in the site" describes several obverse/reverse combinations for coins of Mesembria on the Euxine (pg. 278) and one for Mesembria on the Aegean (pg. 248). The first Mesembria coin you meet in his site (pg. 248) is the one from the Aegean Mesembria. And yes, later he has two coins from Euxinus Mesembria. It's nice he is doing the difference between the two Mesembrias, he is the only one I could find to do that, but again, I am not in the ancients... "There were two places of this name in Thrace, one an important colony of Megara on the Euxine, the other mentioned only by Herodotus (vii. 108), who calls it a continental stronghold of the Samothracians.". -- E' mai possibile, oh porco di un cane, che le avventure in codesto reame debban risolversi tutte con grandi puttane!
