Mintage Information Question
Hi all,
Does anybody know of any websites that list the mintage totals for U.S. Coins? Mainly interested in mintage info on Proof coins, (Silver Eagles, Sac Dollars, Proof Sets etc...) I am looking in the 2004 redbook but it doesn't list much beyond 2002 for most coins, And most of the stuff I am looking for are from 1999 to now. I've also done websearch after websearch on google but coming up empty except for State Quarter mintage numbers. I even tried the U.S. Mint site but didn't see anything that looked like what I wanted, Unless I was just looking in the wrong spot? I figured info like that should be pretty easy to find. But I sure aint finding it. I'm just looking for something that breaks down the denominations of coins by title or year then lists the mintage figures for each. Thanks, Steve |

Check this URL for 2002-2004 coins: http://www.usmint.gov/about_the_mint...fm?action=prod uction_figures Select a year to see the figures for all pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, half-dollars, and dollar coins produced for that year. There's also State Quarter Mintages. Risa A day without paronomasia is like a day without punshine. |

The link Risa provided is the one I use. The hardest part of looking for
mintages on the Mint's website is terminology. They throw the word "mintage" around, but they use "production figures" on their site. http://www.usmint.gov/about_the_mint...fm?action=prod uction_figures Jerry "Shy Steve" writes: Does anybody know of any websites that list the mintage totals for U.S. Coins? On the Mint's website where they seem to be listing production figures for
gold, silver and platinum eagles by month, those are actually sales figures. This causes a problem when the official distributors pre-buy the next year's coins in December, so that they can take delivery on the first business morning in January. Thus, on their chart, most (but not necessarily all) of the December figures for any given year are actually the next year's coins. .. I do not think that the same problem applies to business strike coins, as they simply do not "sell" them to the Fed until after the first of the year. Thus the state quarters struck in December of one year for release after January 1 end up counted in the January production. .. As to the Redbook's mintage figures, remember that the 2004 Edition was printed in June of 2003, by which time the Mint had not yet released 2002 sales figures because they were still making adjustments for lost and returned sets. The Mint is trying to be very precise in their final sales figures, for which they should be commended, but it would be nice if they would release a provisional sales figure shortly after the end of a calendar year which the Redbook (and any other publication that cares) could run in italics or with a footnote or whatever until the final official number is released. Check this URL for 2002-2004 coins:

Thanks for the link, I clicked on it but it redirects me to another part of the mint website where they are selling nickels and other stuff. Now I did manage to find a page on the mint site that gives mintage numbers for different denominated coins but they are all MS coins and only mintage figures for Philly and Denver. Then all the quarters are underneath it. It doesn't mention proof coins at all....Atleast that I saw. It seems they would have a better and more open system of making it so collectors can access this information easier. I don't think any of this stuff is kept secretive for any reason, Especially backdated coins. I understand it takes time to release records for recent coins but mintage totals for every operating mint shouldn't be that hard to tabulate and give to the collecting public. Maybe Redbook should start a website with just mintage totals for each coin, each year, each mint, That has been released. Make that section of the site free for all users and those who want more in depth details of each coin, charge a small subscription fee. With a paid subscription collectors would also be able to access up to date pricing info that changes almost weekly now. Mintage totals are a big part of collecting coins, It could be a major deciding factor if a collector chooses to buy a specific coin or not, There is just no reason this info shouldn't be easier to obtain other than waiting for a new book to come out once a year. ESPECIALLY with the coin market the way it is today. This stuff should be just a mouseclick away for those who want it Just my 2 cents, Maybe I'm off base... Steve |

Steve How about if the US Mint's Web Site had a feature whereby, it acted like an eBay Buy It Now fixed price sale page.. it would say how many coins or sets are still available, and when the sale ends. So you'd go to buy a Silver Proof Set a few months into its sales period and see something like.. Item #Z02 - 2004 Silver Proof Set [The usual description and pictures].. Price: $31.95 plus shipping and handling of $4.95 per order.. Total quantity authorized: 900,000.. Total available: 293,009 Limit per customer: None Sales period started MM/DD/YY Sales period ends MM/DD/YY or when quantity authorized is exhausted.. Quantity to order [Input box].. [Click to add to shopping cart].. By refreshing the page you could update it in real time and see how fast or slow something is selling.. same as eBay.. Harv -- Why isn't the number 11 pronounced onety-one? |

Harv -- Why isn't the number 11 pronounced onety-one? That'd be a good idea, Like you said it would show real time supply and demand for each individual item, Be it one coin, or a roll or a set. That would benefit collectors and investors because we will be able to see what is hot and what isn't and make better decisions all around. Plus we'd get to see how many of those damn 1999 SBA proof dollars are still left at the mint 5 years after they were released and still not sold out. lol I have a few of those and nobody seems to want them now but I suspect they'll be worth quite a bit years from now, Which is why I grab them up. I have 1 I am debating having graded, This one is flawless. It's got to be a solid PR69 maybe even a PR70. Steve |

There is just no reason this info shouldn't be easier to obtain Steve- I couldn't agree with you more. This has always been a huge problem for collectors, and things have only marginally improved in the past 200 years. Regards, Tom |

I use this site a lot but it currently only goes up to 2002 figures. HTH Thanks, I marked that one, I'll have to go back later over the next few days and figure out how to read the numbers listed. I saw a bunch of decimals and "e" in each number. But that looks like the closest thing I've been looking for. Thanks again, Steve |
