Good hinges ?
Hi there all,
I need to get some hinges and wondered if anyone had used those from W.H Smiths, they used to sell SG but now it seems not, or are they just re-branded. If not, what other's are on offer, i refuse to pay SG £3.50 to post me something that weighs not much more than the envelope ! Regards Craig |

Do you have a contact number or url ? For hinges: http://www.subwaystamp.com/shop/prod...ype=m&brand=gk The site is newly revised - I checked it just a few days ago and found a minimal site that said that a new, redesigned site was in the works. Oddly enough, the new "About Subway" page reads as though its late owner, Hugh "Mel" Goldberg, was still alive and running things. = Eric Craig wrote: Thanks, Do you have a contact number or url ? With both sites I get nothing but a blue background with a padlock image in
the centre and stamp perfs on the left. One has the words "Product Catalogue" in the upper right. That's it. No doubt I'm missing some software that the designer deemed essential. Perhaps this is the re-designed website? Hi Craig:
I need to get some hinges and wondered if anyone had used those from W.H Smiths, they used to sell SG but now it seems not, or are they just re-branded. Some here have suggested the Dennis' hinges - and they're quite satisfactory for used stamps - but don't even think of using them on a mint stamp! They'll be almost impossible to remove. The Cohn hinges (Fold-O hinge) were and are still great. The Fold-O hinge is still being produced - but you have to be careful here. The new packs look almost the same as the old "good" packs. The difference is that on the red band on the front of the packet the word "Cohn" has been replaced by "Unitrade of Canada" and these hinges suck! They either tear the stamp or leave thins in them - no matter if mint or used. You could always soak the used and get the hinges off. Mint is a different matter. The real king of hinges is the old Dennison (not Dennis'e'n). This too is something you have to look carefully for - the packs look the same - but the old pack has the name spelled Dennis(o)n, the ones to stay away from spell the name Dennis(e)n. Both the Dennison and Cohn are still readily available - if you know where to look. I use e-Bay US, e-Bay Canada and all the other foreign accesses to e-Bay. If you check e-Bay in those places you'll find an occasional pack of Dennison up for auction at the horrid price of (U.S.) $17.95 - and there are nitwits placing bids at that price. Simply check out e-Bay every couple of days. Eventually you'll find someone making offers (perhaps 2-4 ) auctions of these items. Drop them a note asking if they have a quantity and if they'd like to sell them at a slight discount. Within the past 4 months I've picked up 30 packs of Dennison hinges at about $2.50 per pack and I got 35 of the old Cohn packs at 80 cents each. I got the Dennisons from a man in Canada and the Cohn from another guy in Chicago. Shipping was about $11.00 - $6.00 from Canada and $5.00 from Chicago. They're out there, you just have to look. Of course the prices quoted are in $U.S. Shipping to the UK would probably be quite different. But either of the quantities I bought should cost less than the £3.50 you quoted for a single pack. Hmmm, maybe a little more - I dunno for sure. If not, what other's are on offer, i refuse to pay SG £3.50 to post me something that weighs not much more than the envelope ! Handshakes, Dakota |

Not to flog a deceased equine, but if I can't see the Subway web site on a
computer that's only two years and a few months old because I don't have this or that software, then Subway has a problem! I'll drop the president a note. Speaking of equines, Susan and I went to see Seabiscuit this afternoon. A wonderful film! I think the Academy Awards people will have trouble deciding which of four actors to give the Best Actor award to, and then they'll have to decide which of the remaining three get Best Supporting Actor. And they may be tempted to give an Oscar to the horse, just on general principles! I am generally pretty scornful of Hollywood films, but this one made me want to start a horse racing topical/thematic collection! I'd even like to buy a horse, but Susan says the balcony in our apartment is too small, and she refuses to let a horse live inside with us. Wives! Well, the site is pretty useless unless you have javascript enabled, but even with that shut off I still get a lot more than you seem to get. I cannot say what the problem is. Perhaps something that doesn't work with your browser. [Actually, looking at the web page source, that padlock should not appear if javascript isn't enabled. The code relocates it whenever the screen is resized, but fails on the IE5 browser. Works with the Mozilla 1.3 browser.] At the bottom of the page, as I view it, is a link to http://www.is2tech.com/, apparently the designers of the new website. Perhaps you could ask them for help. Or send mail to mailto = Eric Bob Ingraham wrote: With both sites I get nothing but a blue background with a padlock image in the centre and stamp perfs on the left. Some web "designers" seem to have a need to use all the latest gee-whiz technologies and forget that the main thing is to make the site work for as many people as reasonably possible. Web sites are nothing more than a means to communicate something to someone, yet it seems to me that the vast majority of web designers fail to a large degree to communicate successfully. What amazes me is when that failure occurs on a commercial website on which a business depends. Bob = Eric |
