Default Parker 51 versus other parkers

I'm still a novice pen collector, and need some help ditinguishing
between certain pens. I know that the Parker 21 is a less expensive
version of the Parker 51, and can be found very cheaply. How does the
nib compare, and what is the filling system? Basically, I'm wondering
how do the Parker 51, 21, and 45 stack up in terms of quality, size
and looks.

many thanks,
Ed

Ed,

You might find the following site helpful. I'm a new collector as well...

www.richardspens.com/?page=ref_info/51_vs_21.htm

This page describes the differences between the 51 and 21. I have one of my
father's old 'school pen' 21s, and am hoping to get my hands on a '51' for
low $$$ either on eBay or in a garage sale/flea market some time soon...

Regarding the '45'...my impression is that it's about the same quality as
the Frontier, though I'm not sure whether the '45' has a lifetime warranty
like the Frontier does. Both strike me as good entry level/medium quality
pens...I think that both are available at about the same price? (Don't quote
me on that though, heh...) I just like the look of the ss Frontier better.

Pics of the '45' and Frontier on the Parker site:

http://www.parkerpen.com/sanford/con...lections.jhtml

Of course, Parker still makes the '45' and Frontier so the modern versions
are cartridge/convertor fill versus the '21' and '51' which have an ink sac.

I hope that this helps!

My small working collection:
Parker Reflex red ca. 2004
Parker Frontier stainless gt ca.2004
Parker '21' burgundy/stainless ca.1950s

Regards,
Daniel

I own several Parkers. A Sonnett broad nib, converter or cartridge fill.
Nice writer but a bit wet for my taste. Also have one of the first 45's
from the 1960's that is my workhorse, cartridge or converter. A 51 that
is a great writer but I wish was more flexible. My favorite is the 45.
Try one from e-bay
Cheers

I have a Sonnett also which has been plagued by leak problems. Need to send it
back to them, but it is an excellent writer and I would like to get some
additional Parkers.
