Default how determine the value (Josephus Flavius)

Hi,
I am new to this group. I was wondering where on net I could at
least roughly determine the fair value of a book that has been kept in
my family for many years.
The book is "War of the Jews", written in ghotic German, German
translation from the year 1552 of the important work of Josephius
Flavius ("De bello Judaico" in 7 parts). We know that the book is
rather valuable not only because of almost 500 years since it was
written but also mainly because of its illustrations contained in it.
Is there on net a search engine where the value could be roughly
determined ? Or a place on net where to contact with dealers to value
it ? Or a place on net worth recommending where prosp. buyers and
sellers can meet ?
Thanks for any info

Regards
Tom

You say "500 years since it was written" but the most importance
would be "500 years since it was published". Are you saying that
you have a 1552 edition, or a reprint? What you really need to
determine is the publication info which is listed on the first one
or two pages of the book. It will tell you who printed your book,
when, where, if it's a reprint of an earlier edition, etc, etc.

http://addall.com/used/ searches several booksellers' databases.

I found two copies of your title: http://snipr.com/1nwwy -- does
either resemble what you have?

When was it actually *printed*? When it was written is irrelevant.

(There is no such thing as "ghotic German" - Gothic was a separate
language that died before the invention of printing; the weird-looking
typeface that survived up to the Third Reich is called Fraktur, and
you can find ordinary modern German text printed in it).

Is there on net a search engine where the value could be roughly
determined ?

If you have a sixteenth-century copy the only way you'll find out is
to auction it.

Hi, here's Tom with Josephus Flavius issue again...

Thanks for your responses. I'm not knoledgeable
about books and English is not my mother tongue so excuse me
that I may be inaccurate in my descriptions.

-1. first - I found on net an e x a c t image jpg of what the first
page of the book looks like. it's at German wikipedia:

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flavius_Josephus
(in the middle on the right in the section "Werk")

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bild:Fl...on_of_1552.jpg
(direct link)

In the image, furthest at the bottom, there is written something
like that "zu Frankfurt am Meyn/ Bei Ch. Egenolff", which is exactly
what stands in my book.
As you can see from the image, the title is "Judische Chronic"
At the very end of my book, the same inscription is repeated:
"Gedruckt (so *printed*) zu Frankfurt am Meyn/ Bei Ch. Egenolff
M.D.LII."
end of citation

-2.secondly, it's not a reprint because the book was examined by
Archives specialist, or however they might be called, from
National Library Institute in my country and the book was confirmed
to date back to 1552 - so paper in this book is guaranteed to
have over 400 years. (but the impractical thing about dealing
with National Library in my country is that they want the book
donated to them because they don't have money to buy it)
So the book being the German translation of the work by Flavius
was printed in 1552 - but of course original work by Flavius
was written in 75-79 (first century), as this German Wikipedia states

-3.Thanks for showing me the difference between "ghotic" and
Fraktur typeface - indeed when I looked up some web pages about
Fraktur I am sure that the book is written in that typeface,
which shows in that jpg image at German Wiki

-4.Sorry about naming it in English title, I just used the name
of that work by Flavius which I found on English Wikipedia on Flavius
In fact there is no English word in this book.

-5. I probaly found this book at http://www.addall.com/used/
as you suggested me that I should under the right title:
"Judische Chronic"

Thanks for giving me directions, sorry for lengthy post...
Tom

Hi, here's Tom with Josephus Flavius

our book perfectly fits that description - the year, the publisher
Egenolff Frankfurt am Main, the elaborate lenghty title -word in word
the same, the woodcuts

as for Mr. Bi Di , we rely on what we were told by people
from Nat. Libr. in our country who confirmed authenticity and
what is more important wanted the book to its collection.
They probably wouldnt rather want something that is fake
like a modern reprint

but to be honest, our family is rather dissapointed since
yesterdey when we found out the price. We inmodestly
counted on a figure with maybe one more digit
So the book will probably stay in our family for another
5 centuries to increase in value !
Thanks for addAll.com link
