"Buffalo Dollar redux?"..

Harv, evertime I've had my order "backordered, the Mint has not charged my
credit card until my items have shipped. This last happened with the 12
Marine Corp Commems I ordered.

This could be a problem -- my card expires in two years.

Actually, this isn't quite as funny as it sounds. One of the Marine Corp
Commem orders I had been waiting for hadn't shipped on the date it was
supposed to. I called the Mint and the nice lady told me that the credit
card they had on file had expired before the ship date. She said I'd called
just in time...they were about to cancel the order. She updated my info and
I had the coins within a week.

That last time I ordered something with a waiting period from the US
Mint, my credit card was not charged until they actually shipped.
That actually works better for a store, because if things get screwed
up and they can't send someone an order, they don't have to go through
the process of processing refunds. Amazon.com does things the same
way.

Always the same with me. Credit card not billed until item actually shipped.

When I got my initial email from the US Mint about these coins, I believe
that the email stated that delivery of these coins would not be until after
4/30/06. I'll have to search my archived mail at work to see. I just
logged into the website and purchased 1 of each of the 4 coins. Took less
than 3 minutes to complete the transaction.

All of them are marked "product available for shipping 4/30/2006".. what
the!?

Did i finally get onto the US Mint's site too late? Did anyone who got on
earlier see the same three and a half month wait or did they sell so many
earlier today that now new orders are pushed back that far?

Same problem. Mint site was slow and the coins are on back order.

Tried getting on and ordering from work about 20 minutes after the
start of sale. Could not get through. Came home for lunch and got
through but ever so slowly (around an hour after start of sale). Same
ship date as you.

Got 2 of each coin and 2 of the coin and chronicles, my largest Mint
order to date. I'm sure they will tank :-)

Just hope now my better half doesn't see the Visa statement in May.

I think it's also law, although i'm not sure if it's a Federal law, that any
merchant who charges your plastic has to ship what you paid for within
thirty days or refund your money. Someone here will know for sure. I did
find on the Mint's site that they won't charge (for these Ben Franklin
coins, for example..) .. until around the time they ship so that's a relief.
I hate having to keep track of money out, nothing in. Like when ordering
from the Vatican. Apparently that US law doesn't apply to them becaue they
charge you but you don't get their coins in the mail for at least two
months. Then again, their coins are instant sell-outs and instantly worth
10x to 20x what you paid for them, so they're worth waiting for. My last
order from them was for their 2005 sets, I got two Mint sets, one Proof set
and one Sede Vacante set. Total outlay about $260.00. I put one of the Mint
sets on eBay and got $275.00 for it, so selling that one set paid for all
four and the three I'm keeping, which are worth about $1500.00 at high
retail are now "free." At least that's the way I look at it.

Everyone always rushes out to order new things from there. It doesn't make a
bit of difference as far as recieving a higher quality coin if you order on
the first day or the last day since the coins get all jumbled up. I've
gotten some of the best coins I have from there by waiting for as long as I
feel safe to wait for.
And you'll won't have to worry that they'll sell out either. They have never
sold out anything on the first day. I don't think they've ever sold
something out in the first month even. The Marine commems were probably the
fastest selling coin they ever made and those didn't sell out until months
later. Congress was also late authorizing coins to be made--pretty bad when
such a simple thing as authorizing the making of money is pushed back so
late in the year--I'll wager that the US Mint will be cutting off sales
early for something this year since they got such a late start.

Wrong on both counts. The 2001 Buffalo Dollar Coin and Currency set sold out
in four days and all 500,000 Buffalo Dollars sold out in two weeks.

That beats by FAR the Marine Commemoratives.

I can't remember recent examples of any one-day sellouts but I believe there
have been a couple.

I believe the Connecticut quarter mini-bags sold out in a little over
5 hours.

This thrilled the RCC Connecticut Quarter Cartel until we learned a
few days later that the Mint sold over 70,000 bags in those 5 hours,
well above the 10,000 bag limit for the first 4 States Quarters.
