Default Restoring tarnished Proof Silver Eagles?

I have a couple of proof Silver Eagles that have been left exposed to
the open air (one in a drawer, and one in a display case) that have
suddenly turned almost black in the last couple of months. Is there a
way to restore them to their original state without damaging them or
otherwise affecting the value?

Thanks,
Trevor

Not without ruining that lovely mirror-like finish. You could dip
them, but they'll show where the silver nitrate, -oxide, etc. departed.

Just best to put them up on eBay as "beautifully toned" ;-)

I have had great luck using E-Z-Est metal cleaner. I've used it on dozens of
coins and it only removes the grime, not the luster. Others may warn
against dipping, but it has never been a problem when using E-Z-Est
solution. You just have to only dip them for 10-15 seconds and rinse in
baking soda water for a few seconds and then rinse in cold water for a
minute. Like I said, I've NEVER removed any luster using this method.

These would typically not be Proof coins, though, with their mirror-like
fields and frosty devices, would they?

I've use E-Z-Est on proof silver and clad coins with no ill effects. It
does not affect their luster. Actually getting the gunk off enhances their
luster. I know lots of people have ruined a coin or two by dipping in
whatever they used. I am just saying, from personal experience, you can't
hurt a coin by properly dipping it in E-Z-Est thiouria solution. You don't
have to believe me, no one has to believe me. I just offer my experience
and others can argue or agree. ;o)
