Post Mark Collectors Club Annual Convention
For those who may be interested, here is an announcement for the
annual convention of the Post Mark Collectors Club: Post Mark Collectors Club Meets July 21-24 in New London, CT, for 49th Annual Convention NEW LONDON, CT – May 26, 2010 – Members of the national Post Mark Collectors Club will gather here in late July for their 49th annual convention, bringing their interest in postal history and its paper collectibles back to New England for the first time in 12 years. The July 21-24 convention will draw more than 100 collectors and guests to New London for four full days of postmark discussions and trading. Highlights will include a side trip to Block Island, Rhode Island, where there will be a special pictorial cancellation marking the occasion, educational sessions on historic postmarks, post office and postal history, and a special U.S. Postal Service temporary station on-site. Members of the club collect postal cancellations from U.S. and foreign towns and cities, and their conventions always feature auction sales of historic postmarks and valuable postal history and related collecting material. There are also special exhibits and tables full of tens of thousands of postmarks that are free for the taking by members. This year, there will also be sales tables, open to the public, with a strong emphasis on markings from discontinued post offices, pictorial cancels, cacheted first day and special event envelopes prepared by the Connecticut Cover Club, and other philatelic material. Also available for inspection and sale will be PMCC’s Directory of Post Offices, the world’s only published guide to all currently operating U. S. post offices, available in individual state lists or as a comprehensive book. The Post Mark Collectors Club was founded in 1946 and has held yearly conventions since 1962. In addition to uniting collectors, the club also maintains the largest U.S. museum dedicated to historic postmarks. Located in Bellevue, Ohio, the Margie Pfund Postmark Museum has well over a million postal cancellations on covers and cards, many from post offices that might otherwise be long forgotten. It also features thousands of post office photographs and an extensive library of postal reference books. The July convention, most of which is open to the public, will feature a set of special commemorative covers, along with a temporary U.S. Postal Service substation that will postmark outgoing mail with a cancellation specially designed for the event. The site of the convention is the Radisson Hotel, 35 Governor Winthrop Blvd. in New London. Hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday. For more information about the convention, contact Andrew Mitchell at 860-243-9026, , or P.O. Box 5, Tariffville, CT 06081 More information about the Post Mark Collectors Club can be found at www.postmarks.org. If you can attend, enjoy!
