France Prephilately
I have been offered a wonderful collection of French stampless covers
from 1628 to 1867. Before I decide to purchase or not, I need to read up on the markings etc. Can anyone here suggest a book (French is OK!) that covers this period and its markings? Many thanks in anticipation. -- John Taormina The MIDDLE-AGED one To email me you must remove "notme" and "jack" |

It would be helpful however to get some idea of scarcity of markings so I can come to some sort of idea about the price of the collection. Thanks once again. -- John Taormina The MIDDLE-AGED one in Australia To email me you must remove "notme" and "jack" |

Il se trouve que John Taormina a formulé :

In France you have 3 books for letters without stamps ! - a very old one: "la poste de l'ancienne France" From Rochette (issued in the 1960 th, with supplements that you can find when you are happy between 200 and 400 ¤!! I have only a bad copy of the first book - a red book "les marques linéaires de Francer 1792 - 1832) from J and V Pothion, you cannot buy it mint only used (100/200 ¤ ) I have a copy; should be issued again at end ot this year by BAUDOT; - the same tittle from A MATHIEU, same price and I have it not - a green book, giving worth of all "catalogue des cachets à date type 11 12 13 14 15 " all round cancelations before and after 1849 but without stamp from A CHEVALLIER, I have the book but I think it is no more possible to find it mint (A. Chevallier died some years ago). If you'd like more informations about some cancelation, please let me know directly, what kind, what town, what date and if possible dimension in mm (length, higth)!! Sorry for my bad English!! Lenain, I think you mistyped Rochette for Lenain ? However, I am not at all an expert in 17th century french covers. -- Best regards, Bruno |

But some of them are sell hundred of ¤; have you only towns or also army letters? -- Pour m'envoyer un mail, remplacer anti par droger et manama par wanadoo; to send me directly a mail replace anti with droger and manama with wanadoo; |

Considering the OP stated: "stampless covers from 1628 to 1867.", the "red" ^^^^^^^^^^^ book would also apply to the latter part of the 'collection'. Oops I misread 1687 for 1867. So sorry. -- Cordialement, Bruno |

Many thanks your replies, especially Jean-Paul for his list of books. Most helpful!
