Actually, I hate to admit it but WhoreHead is right. Auto-Tracking
emerged sometime in 1990-1991 on the Hi-Fi high-end decks, and the
tracking knob was quickly phased out. Sorry! :-(

It's odd he was right, but hey, it had to happen *sometime*. snip

You're both wrong. The "knob" has nothing to do with the scanning
heads per se. What id did was change the effective distance between
the sync head and the helical scan drum to get the scanning heads in
the middle of the tracks. Most did this with sync delay, although
some early Betamaxes used a servo motor to move the sync head. I had
nothing to do with the scanning heads whatsoever.

All "auto tracking" does is look for the "hot spot" and park the sync
distance there. Many times, "auto tracking" doesn't result in the
best signal, either...depends on the circuit.

Sounds like "tracking adjustment" is just that, tracks the tape.

Sounds like this DoucheBob guy has **** for brains.

Okay, I getcha there. I've noticed that on almost all of my
prerecorded 'budget' tapes recorded on EP are a bit off with
auto-tracking. The image is fine, but the audio is off. I just track
it so it's not in Hi-Fi and voila! It's fine.

Sorry if you thought I was jumping on you- it wasn't my intent at all.

Well, it's better than him thinking he's Marilyn Monroe. I was getting
tired of sewing him into that cream-colored dress just so he could
lip-synch "Happy Birthday Mr. President" for the one-hundredth time.

The last time was the worst: he smeared himself with 40-weight so he
could be appealing to his hero, President Dubya.

Try being ME! I stopped him before he desecrated "Diamonds Are a
Girl's Best Friend".
