"Because of a transition in online ordering operations, the United
States Mint online catalog is currently unavailable.

The decision to suspend access to the website was made on January 15
when we determined we could not ensure uninterrupted service or the
reliability of the ordering system until the new provider was given
appropriate time to assume and test operations. Although we understand
the inconvenience this may cause, please be assured that we are
working to resolve the issue and will have the site operational in the
next few days."

Right - change providers the same day your new coins are released.

If someone in private business did that, they would soon be out of business.
Since this is the government, they don't have to worry about competition nor
going out of business. Idiocy runs rampant in government...

When I was in government (well, the military), and needed to stand up
a new
computer system, we spent lots of time testing it beforehand, then ran
both
systems in "dual mode" to ensure that the new system behaved just like
the old before switching over, and then still had the old system ready
to
take back over if major problems arose.

It is especially poor form to change systems at the same time you are
launching
a new batch of products. My current company has a standing policy to
prevent
changes to the system before a major launch of a product or service,
to keep
the system stable and ensure that nothing goes down while they're
trying to
showcase the new work.
