London
I just had a week in London, and of course, spent a good deal of time
looking for and at books. Despite the fact that the shops are nothing like what they used to be, I came home with fifteen hardcover volumes! I went to Maggs Bros, and was treated very nicely. (I'd heard that they were not always welcoming to walk-ins, but that was not my experience...) It was rather sad to walk along Charing Cross Road. Some of the buildings which once had housed nice second-hand shops were gone, and not all the shops I remember were still there. Nevertheless, I found a few things that had been on my want list for a long time. One reason for taking the trip when I did was to catch the bookfair at the Royal National. This was smaller than it used to be, too, but there was a lot of interesting stuff on view, and more than one dealer was openly willing to lower the marked price to make a sale. There was another fair at the Holiday Inn on Coram Street, but this was very "antiquarian," not so much for the general collector, and priced appropriately. (One dealer told me he believed the two would have to merge next year, and all would be at the Royal National.) |
