Default SS160 repair help - picks every record

John, this sort of thing can be tricky to fix but relatively easy to
troubleshoot.

First, remove the pulse amp plug from the control center. Start the
machine by making a selection. It should not stop at any slot. Let it
scan out and stop.

Put the pulse amp RCA plug back in. Start the mech scanning --from
the service switch-- make sure once it starts the switch is then in
the normal or play position (whatever it is called). The mech should
again scan and eventually stop w/out playing a record.

Now, make a selection, if the mech immediately stops to play and plays
one after the other the problem is usually excessive write-in current
caused by a defective voltage regulator in the control unit. Check
for 150VDC at the Zener. Also check for the presence of AC ripple
there.

Other possible causes a Poor contact on the RCA plug, clean and
slightly squeeze the shell to make better contact. Also, check for
sparking on the contacts under the tormat memory unit as the mech
scans. This will generally result in random stopping -not
consecutive.

Has the control unit been rebuilt? If not that may wash out a lot of
these sorts of problems. The main things to replace are electrolytic
caps and some of the smaller caps as well. Then check the resistors
for tolerance.

These later selection receivers are much simplified from earlier tube
based ones, but some of the same prob's occur.

Hi Rob,

Box is fixed. You were right on the money. Poor contact on the RCA
plug, clean and
slightly squeeze the shell to make better contact.

The right amp needs repair also, it is working , but very low volume.
I'm thinking or recapping the amp to repair that.

Thanks again,

John

That's great to hear! One thing I forget to suggest is to solder a
short length of wire from the shell of that plug, add a spade lug to
the other end and bolt it under any convenient screw on the chassis

I also do for the ground pin on the tormat and keyboard in my
commercial installations. It eliminates the situations where
resistance develops on the ground return and causes the mech to
immediately trip when a selection is made.

Regards, Rob
