What you're describing is its present usage, including being a field
for harvesting e-mail addresses. Excuse me -- I have to read my e-mails
where I can invest in hot small-cap stocks, buy Viagra, and update the
private details of an account I don't have at a bank I've never heard
of. Someone could argue that THAT is what the internet was created for.
