Looking Back #54 - Curtailing (US) Mail Service
Curtailing (US) Mail Service
Drastic changes are in development affecting the collection and delivery of mail matter, particularly in the larger cities, with many small box collections being discontinued, or limited to one or two a day. Many of the boxes are to be removed from present locations and soon will be found only on main thoroughfares. Carrier deliveries are being reduced, and plans are to confine them only to the morning hours, with doubling up of routes. These changes will affect not alone the residential districts, but business areas as well. All part of a general curtailment due to conditions brought about by war activities. - George B. Sloane Sloane's Column Stamps September 26, 1942 Note: Thus ended the twice daily residential and business mail deliveries which I grew up with. Somehow or other, no one remembered to restart them after World War II ended. We had gotten used to it like so many other things which never returned after the war -- like free sticks in the ice cream on a stick! |
