Brag
Not that I haven't had things to brag about ere now, but this one is
special for reasons known to those of you who are aware of a project I've been working on for the past few years. I recently bid on, and won, a first-printing copy of _Twisted_ (Belmont L92-535, 1962, ed. by Groff Conklin) from the estate of Donald Wandrei, co-founder of Arkham House. Over and above that detail, it's the first copy of the first edition I've owned, and it's in terrific shape. But the brag is that it was signed by the editor, about whom I've assembled the first biography and index and which will be published in a month or so (I won't mention the pubisher lest Bob F. break a fingernail replying that I'm in violation of the RCB rules). Signed Conklins are rare; this is perhaps the second or third I've ever seen, and the only one I've seen listed since I began compiling the index. Now, I *paid* for it - more than I would have liked, but I'm a cheap ******* - to the tune of $27.50, but I honestly couldn't let it go. And, for once, Mary not only agreed, but urged me to go higher than I normally would have, thus ensuring I would win it. Now I realize it's a mass-market paperback, not particularly scarce or valuable in and of itself, but I'm absolutely delighted with it. 'Tis a small thing, perhaps, but mine own. |

Bud -
Congrats! Signed Conklins are quite scarce, and it sounds like is a nice item all on its' own, to say nothing of the great association value. I'd like to hear about your book offlist if you get a chance to send me a note. I'd like to hear about your book offlist if you get a chance to send me a note. Best, John Kuenzig Bookseller Bud - Coincidentally, I've just purchased a signed and inscribed copy of Conklin's THE NEW REPUBLIC ANTHOLOGY: 1915-1935 (Dodge Publishing, 1936), and would love to swap scans with you when it arrives in a few days. You may remember that I have a copy of Gold's "Galaxy Reader of Science Fiction" (Crown, 1952) inscribed by Gold to Groff and Lucy Conklin, that contains several inscriptions in an unknown hand (see http://www.charm.net/~edrtjd/GalaxyReader.html ). I'm hoping that my latest purchase will help to identify if any of these inscriptions are in Conklin's hand. Like John, I would be interested in hearing more details of your upcoming publication. How dare you even imply that a book may soon be published?!?!?!? Surely you are aware this violates every both the spirit and letter of the charter! Furthermore, it is such an abomination in the eyes of both god and man that you will probably burn in the fiery pits of hell forever with nothing but Harlequin Romances to read!!!!! -- Bob Finnan The Hardy Boys Unofficial Home Page http://users.arczip.com/fwdixon New & Out Of Print Books, Books-On-Tape, Videos, DVDs, CD-ROMs For Sale http://users.arczip.com/fwdixon/hbsale.htm To reply: replace nospam with fwdixon .................................................. .................... |

Yeah yeah yeah, Bob. Put it to music. At least I'll be down there with my friends. And if you don't think there are used bookstores in Hell where I can trade Harlequins, you don't go to the right church. |

Yeah but you can only trade them for Jackie Collins novels! -- Bob Finnan The Hardy Boys Unofficial Home Page http://users.arczip.com/fwdixon New & Out Of Print Books, Books-On-Tape, Videos, DVDs, CD-ROMs For Sale http://users.arczip.com/fwdixon/hbsale.htm To reply: replace nospam with fwdixon .................................................. .................... |
