George Washington $1 Coin Cover "not available"?!
I just noticed the 2007 George Washington $1 Coin Cover (P21) from the
U.S. Mint's web site says "Product is not available." Anyone know if this is a temporary outage? Or are they already sold out? When I saw that they set the price at $14.95, I thought it was a pretty good deal (compared to the state quarter covers). But now I see that they've lowered the price of ALL the first day covers to $14.95. Wise move, in my opinion. Except for the first few issues, a lot of the state quarter first day covers have sat unsold for *years* now... -- Jim Seymour |

Following up my own post... The mint has moved this offering to the "No longer available" section, so the sell-out is clearly official. They went on sale April 4th and one eBay seller claimed they were sold out on April 12th. My theory for why this sold out so quickly is three-fold: 1) Lower price: $14.95 2) Lower mintage: 50,000 3) PCGS will designate these coins as "First Day of Issue" Additional details on each point: 1) The state quarter covers *were* $19.95, but all first day covers are now $14.95 - which is a more reasonable price. All but the first couple of state quarter covers are available on the secondary market for much less than their original issue price. 2) The 1999 state quarter covers had mintages of 100,000. From 2000-2004, most were 75,000. Then from Minnesota on, it was 50,000. Note: The Montana FDC has only a 35,000 mintage. It will be interesting to see if (or when) it sells out. 3) I predict you will find lots of these covers on eBay that have been taken out of the cardboard envelope, inspected by the seller, and then determined to be unworthy of submission. See this page for the relevant PCGS announcement: http://www.pcgs.com/articles/article...universeid=313 -- Jim Seymour |
