Identification Help Needed: Peru, Poland, Portugal, Romania & El Salvador
Hello,
I am going through an old world-wide stamp collection that was my father's. Prior to this I had little or no experience with stamps. After selling off the duplicate items I have been organizing the rest into stock sheets and binders. I have had my trials and tribulations though, in identification. Right now I've borrowed from the library the "Scott 2004 Stamp Catalog, Volume 5" (P - Sl). After going through several hundred stamps, going through the Scott's several times for each country and also doing a thorough check at important internet sites, I still have several troublesome stamps in a handful of countries that I just have not been able to identify. The entire collection has been lying dormant since the late 1950's. Replies from readers of this newsgroup are highly valued and greatly appreciated. I have uploaded images as follows: PERU http://equipmentrecyclers.hugehost.n...mps.Peru.2.jpg POLAND http://equipmentrecyclers.hugehost.n...mps.Poland.jpg PORTUGAL http://equipmentrecyclers.hugehost.n...s.Portugal.jpg ROMANIA http://equipmentrecyclers.hugehost.n...ps.Romania.jpg EL SALVADOR http://equipmentrecyclers.hugehost.n...s.Salvador.jpg Thanks and Best Regards, Kramer |

The left stamp is Scott 295. The right stamp is a revenue stamp which is not listed in Scott. |

Hello, I am going through an old world-wide stamp collection that was my father's. Prior to this I had little or no experience with stamps. Welcome to stamp collecting. It's nice to see an "I have inherited" post that goes on as "I'm now hooked" rather than "how do I sell 'em" :-) After selling off the duplicate items I have been organizing the rest into stock sheets and binders. Be careful disposing of "duplicates" until you've looked at specialised catalogues. Some of the most common stamps have subtle varieties. Many of us are paranoid about getting rid of anything lest the next version of the catalogue reveals a new variety. Don't we all! But not to worry, people here enjoy the challenge of solving such mysteries. And don't be embarrassed when you find the answer seconds after pressing Send -- we've all done that too. Stamp catalogue blindness is a common disease, and an interesting psychological puzzle. I'll get around to a detailed post on the subject one day. The entire collection has been lying dormant since the late 1950's. Replies from readers of this newsgroup are highly valued and greatly appreciated. I have uploaded images as follows: I can only give you SG numbers, but the descriptions and dates should narrow it down. PERU http://equipmentrecyclers.hugehost.n...mps.Peru.2.jpg L: I think this is the sugar plantation from the industry/agriculture set of 1931, SG 502, set of 7. R: Anti-tuberculosis Fund, 1949, SG 724a, set of 2. POLAND http://equipmentrecyclers.hugehost.n...mps.Poland.jpg L: Labour Day, 1954, SG 849, set of 3. R: Postage due of 1921, surcharged 1923, SG D216, set of 3. PORTUGAL http://equipmentrecyclers.hugehost.n...s.Portugal.jpg "All for the Nation", 1935, SG 888, set of 11 of 4 different designs. SG doesn't list the 3 different shades you seem to have, so they probably aren't significant. Watch out for the "missing accent on É" variety of 10c & 15c "Prince Henry". ROMANIA http://equipmentrecyclers.hugehost.n...ps.Romania.jpg 1-3: These defeated too, but we've been told now. 4: 50th Anniv Roumanian Geographical Soc, 1927, SG 1063, set of 5. 5: King Michael, 1945, SG 1679, set of 45 in 5 different designs. EL SALVADOR http://equipmentrecyclers.hugehost.n...s.Salvador.jpg As it says on them, these are municipal tax stamps, not postage stamps. I have quite a few of 'em too, but no more information. A small suggestion: Life will be easier if you make one country and/or not too many stamps per post. That way people who don't know all the answers at once can at least start to reply. Happy collecting, Chris |
