Default Straits Settlements Mule error

Hi

I have recently acquired a group of malaysian coins, one of which is a
1899 20 cents piece of the straits settlement.

The date as I said is 1899, but the obverse is of Edward VII
(1901-1910). I have checked the edge of the coin and there is no seam,
where two coins could have been joined. I have weighed the coin, and
the weight is 4.09g, where as a 1899 Victoria version I have is 4.28g.
The coin itself, I would say would grade About Fine.

I have checked in Krause, and on the web with Error coin sites, to no
avail.

Has anybody in the group come across this type of error before? or
would know of a site that I could check?

Thanks in advance

Pete

It's extremely unlikely that you have an unlisted "discovery coin." After
all, it's been around over a hundred years!

Check around the date area carefully with a 10X loupe and you may find
evidence of alteration. Also check the rims (you've already checked the
edge, you said) to see if one coin has been hollowed out and another turned
down to fit inside the hollow. This has been done countless times to
produce magician's coins and other curiosities. Meanwhile, don't give up
your day job.

Hi Again

I have got my 10x Loupe, I have checked the rims, and their is no
evidence of hollowing. I then checked the date for any alteration. I
thought there was, but I then checked the date with examples of
correct 1899 Victoria 20 cents piece. The 8, seemed a bit blundered,
but so were the 8's on the correct pieces, and the second 9 seemed a
bit blundered as well, but considering that these coins were also
issued in 1909, I would have thought that the first 9 would have been
altered. I think this might require a trip to a museum :-)

Thanks

Pete

Many Straits Settlements coins were counterfeited "many years" prior
to 1971, i.e., for circulation; see Remick, James, Dowle, and Finn,
The Guidebook & Catalogue Of British Commonwealth Coins, 1649-1971,
3rd ed., pp. 530-31. This particular coin is not mentioned, but a 50c
silver is known with the portrait of Victoria on both sides.
Counterfeits of the 20c dated 1888 (crude) and 1919 (poor lettering on
obverse) are known.

I'd say the weight discrepancy clearly points to something like that.
