Default Question about silver stain

Are some silver stain on the surface of a silver coin considered a fault or
not ?
Can silver stain downgrade an UNC coin to a lesser degree ?

Thanks.

It would be the same grade but worth less because of the stain, it would
be "Unc with a stain". Billy

"How much less?" sez I.

"Fifty to seventy-five percent, " sez the dealer when buying.

"Oh, that's nothing, hardly noticeable, it won't hardly show at all once
you've got in in your album, it's a good-looking piece" sez the dealer when
selling. "Tell ya what, it's marked 81.50, you can have it for 81, how's
that?"

I see, thank you Billy.
So if it was a very beautiful and attractive UNC coin, would you buy it
regardless the stain ?

Good point James !
So, what's your opinion ?
Buy it or not ?...
(based on what a collector would think and not someone buying for
investment or commerce).

Well, there are stains and then there are stains. But when I buy coins or
anything else collectible, I always try to think first like a dealer and
then, maybe even more important, like another collector. You should, too,
unless you are just blind and unquestioning in your love of coins. We can
all get that way from time to time (remember how it is/was with women!) but
you have to ask yourself, "Is this item attractive in spite of its blemish?
Will I or my heirs ever recoup anything more than a tiny fraction of what I
paid in light of the blemish? If I don't buy this right now, will the guy
standing behind me, breathing on my neck, snap it up as soon as I leave the
dealer's table? Do I know enough about this to know whether or not there
are other examples of this item for sale out there somewhere that are free
of this blemish?" I'd want at least two "Yes" answers, preferably three,
and ideally four before I'd recommend that you buy it.

Well, there are stains and then there are stains.

On this particular coin and from what can I say from the pictures, they are
not so annoying.

But when I buy coins or anything else collectible, I always try to think
first like a dealer and then, maybe even more important, like another
collector.

Hmmm ... maybe I am wrong but I *never* think as a dealer...

You should, too, unless you are just blind and unquestioning in your love
of coins.

Well, I am but not at such point :-)

We can all get that way from time to time (remember how it is/was with
women!) but you have to ask yourself, "Is this item attractive in spite of
its blemish?

Yes ! (to me).

Will I or my heirs ever recoup anything more than a tiny fraction of what
I paid in light of the blemish?

Most probably they will but I am not thinking at them when I buy coins...
So basically this is another "yes".

If I don't buy this right now, will the guy standing behind me, breathing
on my neck, snap it up as soon as I leave the dealer's table?

Not sure.

Do I know enough about this to know whether or not there are other
examples of this item for sale out there somewhere that are free of this
blemish?"

Well, they are but I have hardly seen similar coins with so clear fields and
so nice details !

I'd want at least two "Yes" answers, preferably three, and ideally four
before I'd recommend that you buy it.

I can count 2 "yes", 1 probable "yes" and 1 "I don't know, I don't say" :-)
How I've done ?;-)

It it was a common coin I would wait for a stain free one to come along,
if it's a rare coin and the stain meant a large price reduction they I
may be tempted. Billy

Very true :-)
And the proof of that is that I just bought that coin (no big bucks, under
$50 anyway).
As soon as I have it in my hands I'll put a picture on abpn and I'd like to
have your opinion.
