A "a few circulation folds", put there by a coal miner. :-)

This seller of notes consistently has the most amusing descriptions,
this item is a good example.

If this is true "You will put this as pride of place no doubt", the rest
of the notes in the collection must be in several pieces. Billy

When you collect especially older Scottish banknotes from the era of coal
miners, you will come to recognise notes which have been handled by coal
miners as they are notably dirtier and worse for the wears than notes which
saw service say in Edinburgh in the quaint boutiques on the Royal Mile.

On larger denomination notes such as £5 on up there are often dark stains in
the upper right hand corner of the note from counting wax used by bankers
when they were counting notes.

Observe notes and you can tell a lot about how and even probably where they
were likely in circulation.
