Star Notes Question
The star on the notes represent
that the bill is a repeat of one that had gotten damaged in printing. The mint uses the star to show a replacement bill with that number. If I'm wrong go to the US Mint web site and look for the information. The "star" bills are not that common and in very good shape can be worth more that the face value. The 'star' notes are indeed replacement notes for regular notes that have printing issues but the serial numbers are not related. When the BEP issues notes they are in packs of 100 notes with concecutive serial numbers. If a note should get ruined during printing it must be replaced in order to maintain the 100 note count per pack. When 'star' notes are used to replace notes, they are issued in serial number order with the first 'star' note replacing the first damaged note, the second star replaces the second damaged note, etc. without regard to the damaged note's serial number. The BEP also often uses a star note to replace a special serial number that is then kept by some official or other. And you don't want the US Mint web site, you want the BEP's http://www.moneyfactory.com |
