Looking on Ebay, they now have come out with something called the "poor

isn't as distinct as a "true" double die.

Not worth nearly as much as a true DD.

Taint nothin' new. I can remember hearing about them at least 25
years ago. What's new, of course, is that special eBay hype ("The
'other' double die retails for $24 billion in this condition!!!!!")

My understanding of the cause is abrasion on the die that makes the
last "5" appear doubled

take care,
Scott

Those "poor man's" DD's were being touted within a couple years after the true
DD's appeared, IIRC. Living in Rhode Island at the time, my dad and I found two
of the 1955 DD's in rolls and tons of the "poor man's" DD's.

There are many years in the Lincoln cent series that have 'poor man's
doubled dies'. The better ones are for 1993, 1995 and 1955. It's not a true
error. It's machine made damage basically. They should actually not be worth
anything more than what a non-damaged non-error coin would be worth. You can
easily find poor man's doubled dies in circulation--there are billions of
them.
