kcat wrote in message ... The Waterman Phileas (the most common in these shops) is excellent. I've had at least 5 cross my path (as gifts for others plus one of my own) and every one of them has been a smooth, consistent writer. Great pens for the price. That said - do you not wish to buy from an on-line distributor? I ask because even though $30 isn't much for a pen (Phileas usually runs that in office supply stores) - you can get them for considerably less. Pam Braun has the Phileas in blue with fine nib at a clearance price you can not beat. www.oscarbraunpens.com * *just a happy customer I'm in the UK, and I've not heard of any British online pen retailers, though if anyone knows any different, I'd be grateful for a link. I'll have a look at the Waterman pens, but TBH I didn't really like the way they looked, to me they looked like they were trying to look old and expensive. In a Rover rather than Jaguar way , (Rover sold cars which were basically Hondas with plastic wood dashboards for a good while, sold as Sterling in the US for about 5 minutes I believe). I'm not crazy about Rotring but I just don't like heavy pens and flanged nibs. But they are good from what I hear. What counts as heavy? The one I saw didn't seem too bad, but it was probably rather more narrow than I'd like. I remain pretty much clueless WRT Sheaffer. The cheap Parkers - Reflex and Vector - IMO, leave a lot to be desired. The Reflex is okay - the nibs were smooth enough - but problematic. Too dry in one case, the other clicked (a burr on the inside of the tine probably) and they just didn't thrill me with their performance even at $7. The Vector is very small and I found it too slippery (is Sheldon reading? here's another opportunity, dude) and the nib too small. The Vector is a fairly sturdy little pen though. just not my cuppa. Righto. |

so what wrote in message ... Second fountain pen? Only TWO?? (smile) The pen brands you mentioned are very nice, and like little sister kcat toldja, you can purchase many of those pens from online dealers, and for very good prices. Waterman happens to be my favourite, but I have rOtring's very cool Core fp (ok, I have about 5 of them), and even an ATX. You like rOtring, so do an online search for the Core, the 600, and the Freeway. You will LOVE the Core, honest!! Especially the orange/fuschia :-)! Looks like something you might see on sale in a shop joined onto an art gallery in Paris in the early 90s :P. |

Steve Lyons wrote in message ... I have found the Rotring CORE (I have 3) to be very reliable, as is their Freeway. The Freeway is the one I looked at. £15 at Staples (that's about $20 - $25). Seemed a bit narrow though. Sheaffer Balance is good and not too expensive. You are better off searching the Web. For a good, extremely reliable pen, I recommend the Lamy Safari (about $20 on the Web). But you first need to decide whether you like a heavy pen (as the Core is, though the Freeway is not) and whether you like plastic or metal (I personally prefer heavy, metal pens). Not really fond of the Lamy or the Shaeffer TBH, I'm not fond of the flared part of the grip before the nib. I didn't realise I was this picky until I started looking :P. |

Then you may want to look into the Borghini V110.
Nice pen, smooth writer, priced like a Phileas and built like an Edson. Giovanni "Doki" wrote in message ... I quite like rubber grips on pens. |

A smooth pen that costs as much as a Phileas and looks more like an Edson. Smooth writer and it has a soft grip. Giovanni "Doki" wrote in message ... I quite like rubber grips on pens. |

Hi,
There is a store called The Pen Shop UK. I can't remember the website, so try a search for it. They have several branches, including one in Heathrow Airport. delete what doesn't belong there Satrap I find delusions of grandeur to be absolutely true |

My local Staples have various fountain pens on offer after Christmas (Shaeffer, Waterman and Rotring), and I'd prefer not to spend a fortune on something which will most likely be used fairly infrequently. Are any of these half decent? OTOH, are the cheaper Parkers servicable? I quite fancy the Rotring, but have never heard of them making fountain pens before, just draftsman's pens. Doki, Go to eBay and get any number of fine working vintage pens for pennies on the dollar. I have picked up a number of vintage and new pens from ebay and have been quite satisfied. You can pick up very decent pens for less than 30 bucks, and many for less than 20 bucks. |

I thought Rover was the car of the royal family...or of some group hired by the royal family, or something like that, no? The Queen has a custom built Bentley, AFAIK none of them go near Rovers. They seem to have a fair few Rolls and Daimlers. The Royal Protection Squad have a fondness for Range Rovers as they're big and weigh a lot, so they're good for ramming other cars. They might have had Rover 3500s a good time ago (big Buick 213 V8 powered car, used as a police chase car about 20 years ago). Range Rovers are quite different from Rovers though (Range Rover is owned by BMW now, Rover used to be, but is now owned by the Towers Consortium or some such). Land Rover and Range Rover were both bits of Rover I think. Which was probably part of British Leyland... |
