Awesome!!! Something tells me I may be more than just an innocent
bystander & mentor to my grandson for this hobbyG. The more I read in
this NG, on the net and having just returned from a local stamp club
mtg, I had no idea there was such a variety of stamps out there. We
have ZERO stamp stores here but do have 3 different clubs.

I got a Scott's Catalogue from the library today and want to go thru it
looking for the various balloon and maybe sailing ship stamps from the
US. I've searched high and low for a list on those topicals but
couldn't locate such so hey, time to research.

And NO FAIR out there if you know of such a list and wait 2 weeks to
tell meG!

Thanks Kevin. I've visited the shiponstamps site and 2 other topical
sites but didn't find many for US stamps, however burning the late night
oil last night I did find around 20 or so inthe Sciott's Specialixed
catalogue. As for balloons on US stamps, I found 1 set, and those are
the ones the gentleman (Rodney) posted at the beginning of this thread.
They were issued Mar 1983 so maybe its time for another round of
balloon stamps. Now where's that link for suggestionsG........

I think I'll have to as only 4 stamps does not my appetite wetG! I've
been thinking of collecting as many stamps as possible from my birth
year (1948) too, as well as the transportation series (60 in the set I
think). This topical thing is kinda fun!

I'd like to do basic year sets with Daniel (US) as most of these he can
find with a minimum of trouble. We get little mail ourselves and what
there is, is usually metered, not stamped - Grrrrrr..........

Get after your friends and family on this one :-) Lots of people are just
not aware that there are 'pretty' stamps out there still. While some people
collect meters, I hate em. I've had postal clerks reach for the meter
machine only to have me yell - "No!"

My father-in-law started church stamps at his parish. Basically got people
to save up their stamps and pass them in, he took them to the club and
always sold at 5 cents a stamp. All the proceeds go to the church and
everyone had a nice source for the new issues. He would get bags of them
(including one charity) and I would help him drag all the definitives to the
curb (frustrating as that was) then we would sort through the nice ones
getting first pick! Occasionally someone in the church would unearth an old
collection and give it to him as well - we were having some fun with one
such lot when he passed away last month.

Frank
